WIDE LINES
WIDE lines are at least twice the width of a normal width line, so they are at least 8 to 12 inches wide. WIDE lines are used for special emphasis. [MUTCD Section 3A.05] Examples include wide edgelines that may be used for the outside of very sharp curves or at abrupt transitions of road width [MUTCD Section 3B.06], or wide lines that channelize an exit ramp and main freeway lanes where they diverge [MUTCD Section 3B.05]

A WIDE lane line separates a lane reserved for High Occupancy Vehicles (HOVs) from an adjacent general purpose travel lane. This type of WIDE lane line for HOV lanes is DOUBLE SOLID WIDE when crossing the line is prohibited, single SOLID WIDE when crossing the line is discouraged, and BROKEN (dashed) WIDE when it is permissible to cross the line to enter or exit the HOV lane. [MUTCD Section 3B.23]
