Dear Mayor Flicek:

Thank you for your letter of October 5 cosigned by Administrator Jerome Bohnsack and Police Chief Dennis Rohloff. In your letter you transmitted a request from the city of New Prague, Minnesota, for approval to experiment with Mobil Supplemental Crosswalk Identification Devices.

As you are aware, Requests for Experimentation must be in accordance with Section 1A-6 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD). Your letter indicated that the city of New Prague Request to Experiment is in accordance with Paragraph 1A-6 of the Minnesota Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MN MUTCD). We assume that it replicates the National MUTCD and have evaluated the request accordingly. We have reviewed the city of New Prague’s Request to Experiment dated October 5. We will approve your request, subject to the following comments. The information may be faxed to Mr. Harold Lunenfeld at 202-366-3225.

  1. Note that the evaluation procedure should provide for close monitoring of the experimentation, especially in the early stages of the field implementation. The length of experimentation beginning in October 2000 and ending December 31, 2002 is acknowledged.
  2. Please provide for more precise locations of the experimental installations in the city of New Prague.
  3. We assume that the experimentation in the cities of Alexandria and Little Falls, Minnesota, will be coordinated with your efforts, and that you will work with Mr. Gary Thompson, State Traffic Engineer, Minnesota Department of Transportation, 395 John Ireland Boulevard, St. Paul, Minnesota 55155-1899.
  4. Please provide semiannual progress reports for the duration of the experimentation, and provide a copy of the final results to the Federal Highway Administration, Office of Transportation Operations (HOTO-1), within 3 months following completion of the experiment.
  5. Please inform us if the experimental dates change so we can adjust the schedule accordingly.

For reference purposes, we have assigned your request the following official experimentation number and title: "II-429 (E) Mobil Supplemental Crosswalk Identification Device." Please refer to this number in future correspondence.
