Dear Ms. Row:
Subject: Connecticut Project SPR-PL-1(39), State Study No . SPR-2233, "Alternative Merge Sign at Signalized Intersections," Towns of Farmington arid Southington.

At the present time, the "Lane Ends" sign, (Federal Sign No . W4-2) is commonly used in Connecticut to alert drivers that a merge ahead is required.

The Division of Research has initiated a study to develop, field test arid evaluate a new symbol warning sign (Alternate Merging) after signalized intersections . The intent of this sign will be to improve the traffic flow arid merging pattern at the test sites.

We request approval for the design, application, arid placement for experimentation of traffic control devices other than those adopted in the Manual of Uniform Traffic Control Devices, as delineated in the attached 'Request for Permission to Experiment.'

If you have questions concerning this request, please contact the principle research investigator, Mr . Eric G . Feldblum [phone : (860) 258-0392, mailto:eric.feldblum@po.state.ct.us].

Your early approval arid authorization to proceed are solicited for what we believe will be a very successful project.

Sincerely,
Keith R . Lane, P.E.
