Dear Ms. Byszeski:

Thank you for your October 7 letter requesting experimentation with the In-Street Pedestrian Crossing signs. We have reviewed your evaluation plan and approve the request with the following exception:

The crosswalk lines on crossing signs were deleted in the Federal Register announcement of December 18, 2000. There is a 10-year phase-out compliance date for existing installations and effective immediately for new installations. Please remove the crosswalk lines from the proposed signs prior to installation.

As you know, this sign is in a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking for changes to the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices. Based upon the comments received, the proposed sign may or may not be adopted. If the proposed sign were not adopted, existing signs installed for experimentation would have to be removed. If the sign is approved, the signs may remain in place.

For reference purposes, we have assigned your request the following official experimentation number and title: "2-507(Ex) - In Street Pedestrian Crossing Signs." Please refer to this number in future correspondence.

Good luck with this experimentation. If you have any questions, please contact Ms. Cherie L. Kittle at 202-366-2188.

Sincerely yours,

Shelley J. Row, P.E.
