Dear Mr. Gustafson:

Thank you for your letter of December 31, 2002, requesting experimentation with a reverse color chevron alignment sign.

Your request to experiment with a reverse color chevron alignment sign (W1-8) has been reviewed and is approved provided that the following information is provided:

1. The original installation date of the chevron alignment signs on the B-1 interchange ramp on the NY Thruway’s Berkshire Spur and their effect on the crash frequency;

2. The size and sheeting type of the original chevron alignment signs (W1-8) and of any changes in size or sheeting type since the original chevron installation;

3. The current condition of the control chevron alignment signs and their retroreflectivity values;

4. The size and sheeting type and retroreflectivity of the reverse screen color chevron alignment signs used in the experimentation; and

5. The monitoring plan for the experimentation including before and after studies. (See Criteria “G” in Section 1A.10 of the Millennium Edition of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices).

For future reference purposes, we have assigned the following official experimentation number and title to your request: 2-510(Ex)–“Reverse Color Chevron Alignment Sign (W1-8)–NY Thruway. “ Please refer to this number in future correspondence.
