Dear Ms. Rawson:
Thank you for your letter of May 27 requesting permission to experiment with lowered Wrong Way and Do Not Enter signing in an attempt to increase safety by reducing the instances of wrong way driving on exit ramps onto a highway.
The proposed experimental treatment consists modifying the standard mounting height as described in MUTCD Section 2A.18 – Mounting Height of Do Not Enter (R5-1) and Wrong Way (R5-1a) signs to a height of two feet measured from the bottom of the sign to the elevation of the near edge of the pavement.
We have reviewed your revised proposal dated May 25, 2011 and we concur with it. Your experimentation is approved for a period of up to 2 years after installation of the signs. We have assigned this matter the following experiment number and title: "2(09)-15 (E) – Low-Mounted DO NOT ENTER and WRONG WAY-NTTA". Please refer to this number in any future correspondence. We look forward to receiving your periodic interim and final reports on this experiment. If there are any further questions, please feel free to contact Mr. Eric Ferron of our MUTCD Team at eric.ferron@dot.gov or by telephone at 720-963-3206.
Thank you for your interest in traffic operations and safety.
Sincerely yours,
