Dear Ms. Hallmark:

Thank you for your May 12 memorandum requesting approval to experiment with advance curve pavement markings at two horizontal curve locations in Iowa. The experimental treatment consists of a transverse bar, a "SLOW" legend, an arrow indicating the direction of the upcoming curve, and another transverse bar, all of which are in white markings. These markings are intended to provide additional advance warning and reduce vehicular speeds approaching the curves.

We note that the two locations are on county-maintained highways in Harrison County and Des Moines County, respectively. Your request included correspondence from the Harrison County Engineer and from the Des Moines County Engineer concurring with the experiment being conducted on their highways by Iowa State University.

We have reviewed your proposal, evaluation plan, and answers to our questions on an earlier version of your request, and we concur. Your experimentation is approved for a period of up to 2 years after installation of the markings. Please be aware of any State laws and/or directives covering the application of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) provisions that may exist in Iowa.

We have assigned this matter the following experiment number and title: "3(09)-002(E) - Advance Curve Marking — Iowa." Please refer to this number in any future correspondence. We look forward to receiving your periodic interim and final reports on this experiment.
