Dear Mr. Kothari:

Thank you for your December 21, 2001, letter providing additional information pursuant to your request to experiment with pedestrian countdown signals at 10 intersections in Oakland. We regret the delay in responding. Due to mail quarantines and irradiation of all U.S. Postal Service mail addressed to Federal Government agencies here in Washington, DC, mail delivery is being significantly delayed. Your letter was received on January 30.

We have reviewed the information you submitted in support of your request to experiment and we have found it to be acceptable. Your experimentation is approved for a period of up to 2 years. We look forward to receiving your semi-annual reports and final evaluation report on this experimentation. If there are any questions, please contact Mr. Scott Wainwright at 202-366-0857.

As indicated previously, for future reference purposes we have assigned the following official experimentation number and title to your request: IV-232(Ex)--"Pedestrian Countdown Signals-City of Oakland." Please refer to this number in future correspondence. Thank you for your interest in improving pedestrian safety.

Sincerely yours,

Shelley J. Row, P.E.
