Subject: MUTCD, Section 4 Question

Mr. Wainwright,

I have a question concerning Section 4 of the MUTCD. I am currently designing a signal at a T intersection. There are two lanes for each .direction on the major street with an exclusive left turn bay from the major onto the minor street. Since left turns will be prohibited from the minor street onto the major street, and a pedestrian phase will not be provided - cross the major street, there are no conflicts for the major street thru movement which is adjacent to the left turn bay. Thus, only a constant green straight arrow indication will be provided for this through movement.

For the left turn bay on the major street, it is our intention to provide a protected/permissive phase. Therefore, we would like to install a separate signal face for the left turn bay, which will consist of a red ball, yellow ball, green ball, yellow arrow and green arrow, and it will be shielded from the adjacent through lanes.

My question concerns Section 4D.06, paragraph 5 on Page 4D-11, which states:

"If the left-turn signal face does not simultaneously display the same color of circular signal indication as the signal faces for the adjacent through movement, a combination of a LEFT TURN SIGNAL sign (R10-11) and a LEFT TURN YIELD ON GREEN (symbolic green ball) sign (R10-12) sign shall be used."

Does this paragraph still apply when there exists not circular signal indications, but a constant green straight arrow indication for the adjacent through movement?

I appreciate your response to this question.
