Dear Mr. Margron:

Thank you for your letter of January 8 requesting experimentation with fluorescent yellow-green pavement markings for school zone crosswalks under your Safe Walk to School Program. We have reviewed your request and would like to make the following alternation to your placement diagram:

We believe there is a need to contrast the fluorescent yellow-green markings with white markings. We suggest you add a white stripe immediately parallel to the fluorescent yellow-green stripe as a supplement. The reason for this recommendation is both for daytime visibility, were the fluorescent yellow-green can lose contrast in dirty areas; and nighttime where the fluorescent color would not be as bright.

Your request for experimentation will be held until we hear from you. If you agree with the proposed modification, please revise the placement diagram and request as needed and fax to us at 202-366-3225.

For reference purposes, we have assigned your request the following official experimentation number and title: "7-43(E)-Fluorescent Yellow-Green Pavement Markings for School Zone Crosswalks." Please refer to this number in future correspondence.

If you have any questions, please call Ms. Cherie L. Kittle at 202-366-2188.

Sincerely yours,

Shelley J. Row, P.E.
