Nevada Department of Transportation
Traffic/Safety Division
1263 South Stewart Street, Room 413
Carson City, NV 89712

Dear Mr. Richardville:

Thank you for your May 24 letter requesting an interpretation on the use of the Bicycle Route Guide Sign (D11-1) and a proposed Nevada Department of Transportation (DOT) sign to be installed on shared-use paths. We apologize for the delay in responding to your request. All first class mail sent through the U.S. Postal Service to Federal agencies in the District of Columbia must be processed in a special way to protect government employees from the possibility of handling anthrax-tainted mail. The irradiation process delays delivery by several weeks.

We have reviewed your request and offer the following comments:

We believe the R9-7 Shared-Use Path Restriction sign recommended in Section 9B.10 of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD), would be the appropriate sign to use in this situation. However, if a guide sign is preferred, the bicycle sign symbol found in Part 9 of the MUTCD should be used. The bicycle symbol proposed on the guide sign is not an approved symbol found in the MUTCD.

For reference purposes, we have assigned your request the following official interpretation number and title: 9-70(I)-Bicycle Route Guide Sign. Please refer to this number in future correspondence.

If you have any questions, please call Ms. Cherie L. Kittle at 202-366-2188.

Sincerely yours,

Shelley J. Row, P.E.
