Re: Request for Permission to Install Shared Lane Pavement Markings on the US 287/South College Avenue Bicycle Lane Project - CDOT Local Agency Project STE M455-063, 14363; and Laurel Street - US 287 (College Avenue) to Shields Street in Colorado Springs

Dear Ms. Vidal and Mr. Bracke:

Thank you for your letters of May 20 and June 14 requesting permission to experiment with Shared Use Lane symbol markings at two selected locations in the City of Fort Collins, Colorado.

We have reviewed the requests and find the proposed evaluation plans satisfactory. We hereby approve your experimentations with an experimentation period until October 2006. With our approval, we'd like to recommend the following information be collected in addition to what is proposed in the evaluation plans:

For future reference purposes, we have assigned the following official experimentation number and title to your requests: "9-80 (E) Shared-use Lane Pavement Markings - CO." Please refer to this number in future correspondence.

Thank you for your interest in improving traffic safety for bicyclists through the use of the shared lane markings. We look forward to receiving the reports detailed in your evaluation plan as the experimentation progresses. Please submit the interim and final reports as separate documents for each project.

If you have any questions about this response or during the course of your experimentation, please contact Mr. Hari Kalla at 202-366-5915, or Mr. Peter Rusch at 708-738-6735; peter.rusch@fhwa.dot.gov.
