Re: Request to Experiment with "Shared Use Lane" Pavement Markings at selected locations in City of Portland, Oregon.

Dear Mr. Burchfield:

Thank you for your August 31 letter requesting permission to experiment with Shared Use Lane symbol markings at five selected locations in the City of Portland, Oregon. We apologize for the delay in our response.

We have reviewed your Evaluation Plan and the email with additional information explaining the proposed data collection process for the experimentation. This letter is to inform you that your request has been approved for an experimentation period of one year following the installation of the proposed Shared Use Lane symbol.

For future reference purposes, we have assigned the following official experimentation number and title to your request: "9-81(Ex) - "City of Portland Shared Use Lane Markings." Please refer to this number in future correspondence.

Thank you for your interest in improving traffic safety for bicyclists through the use of the Shared Use Lane Markings. We look forward to receiving the reports detailed in your evaluation plan as the experimentation progresses. If you have any questions about this response or during the course of your experimentation, please contact Mr. Hari Kalla at 202-366-5915 or Mr. Peter Rusch at 708-738-6735; peter.rusch@fhwa.dot.gov.

Sincerely yours,
