Dear Mr. Friedman,

The City of Canton is currently working on a transportation improvement project on Walnut and Cherry avenues in their downtown area. As stated on their website, http://cantonohio.gov/engineering/, the project "incorporates a "complete streets" concept where the design approach provides better access to our transportation system for pedestrians, bicyclists, and uses of public transportation." A public meeting was held on October 5th, 2011 where the project design and concept was very well received.

As part of this project, the City of Canton is proposing the installation of strategically placed bicycle signals. The City submitted a request for permission to experiment with this traffic control device on November 22, 2011 to the Division of Statewide Planning at ODOT. I am forwarding this application to you on behalf of the City of Canton. Upon review of the application, it appears the application adheres to the requirements as set forth in Section 1A.10 Interpretations, Experimentations, Changes, and Interim Approvals of the MUTCD. It is also my understanding that the City of Canton is aware of their requirements and responsibilities as it pertains to an experimental traffic control device.

Please feel free to contact Dan Moeglin, Canton City Engineer, at dan.moeglin@cantonohio.gov or myself if you have any additional questions. Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Heather Bowden
