Figure 2C-2. Example of Warning Signs for a Turn

This figure illustrates the placement of warning signs for a turn.

This figure shows a segment of a vertical two-lane north-south roadway that curves to the right or east. Black arrows on the roadway show the direction of travel as one lane in each direction. At the bottom of the figure, the opposing lanes are shown separated by a broken yellow line to the left of a solid yellow line. Along the curve, the opposing lanes are shown separated by a double yellow line. At the top of the figure, beyond the curve, the roadway is horizontal, and the opposing lanes are shown separated by a solid yellow line to the left of a broken yellow line.

Four notes are shown:

  1. See Table 2C-4 for advance placement distance guidelines
  2. See Table 2C-5 for the selection of horizontal alignment signs
  3. See Table 2C-6 for spacing of W1-8 signs
  4. A 25-mph advisory speed is shown for illustrative purposes only

At the bottom of the figure, a sign assembly is shown to the east of the northbound lane. It is composed of a W1-1R sign with a right-angled arrow pointing up and to the right shown mounted above a W13-1P plaque showing the legend "25 MPH."

Farther north, the broken yellow line changes to a solid yellow line. To the east of the northbound lane, a W1-1aR sign is shown with a right-angled arrow pointing up and to the right above the numeral "25" (marked as optional). Opposite this sign and to the west of the southbound lane, a W1-8L right-pointing chevron sign is shown facing northbound traffic. Farther north and to the west of the southbound lane, two W1-8 chevron signs are shown mounted back-to-back, one facing north and one south. Beyond these signs, to the west of the southbound lane and into the turn, a W1-6R sign with a right-pointing horizontal arrow is shown (marked as optional). Beyond this sign, to the west of the southbound lane and at the sharpest angle of the turn, two W1-8 chevron signs are shown mounted back-to-back, one facing in north and one south.

Continuing along the horizontal part of the turn and to the north of the westbound lane, a W1-6L sign with a left-pointing horizontal arrow is shown facing eastbound traffic (marked as optional). Beyond this sign along the horizontal part of the turn and to the north of the westbound lane, two more W1-8 chevron signs are shown mounted back-to-back, one facing east and one west.

Beyond these signs along the horizontal part of the roadway and to the north of the westbound lane, two signs are shown mounted back-to-back. A W1-8R sign with a right-pointing chevron is shown facing eastbound traffic, and a W1-1aL sign with a with a left-angled arrow pointing up and to the left above the numeral "25" (marked as optional) is shown facing westbound traffic.

East of these signs, the solid double yellow line changes to a solid yellow line for westbound traffic and a broken yellow line for eastbound traffic. At the far right of the figure, a sign assembly is shown to the north of the westbound lane. It is composed of a W1-1L sign with a left-angled arrow pointing up and to the left shown mounted above a W13-1P plaque showing the legend "25 MPH."
