Figure 2E-11. Example of Signing for a Two-Lane Intermediate or Minor Interchange Exit with an Option Lane and a Dropped Lane

This figure shows an example of signing for a two-lane intermediate or minor interchange exit with an option lane and a dropped lane.

The figure shows segments of one direction of a vertical highway depicted with four lanes, with the travel direction from the bottom to the top of the figure. At the bottom of the figure, the lanes are separated from each other by broken white lines. In the middle of the figure, the broken white line between the two rightmost lanes is shown changing to a dotted white line. Near the top of the figure, the third lane from the left divides, and this lane and the right lane are shown separated by a solid white line and curving to the right, to the right of a theoretical gore shown with white chevron markings. The left lane, a center lane, and part of the third lane are shown continuing straight, to the left of the gore, and are shown separated by broken white lines.

Seven different signs and sign assemblies are shown along the highway:

  • The first sign assembly is shown near the bottom of the figure where the lanes are divided by broken white lines. It is shown extending over the right lane. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. It shows the numeral "45" in black on a white disk on the top line, the word "Pomona" in white on the second line, the words "1 MILE" in white on the third line, and a horizontal rectangular yellow panel with a black border and legend on the bottom line. The word "EXIT" is shown to the left of a short downward-pointing black arrow to the left of the word " ONLY" on the yellow panel. A smaller horizontal rectangular green plaque with white letters and border is shown above the top right of the sign and shows the words "EXIT 18."
  • The second sign is shown as a pole-mounted R3-8 sign to the right of the highway. It is shown as a square white sign with a black border and legend. On the left half of the sign, a vertical black arrow is shown with two arrowheads: one on the left curving up and to the left and one pointing upward. A short black vertical line is shown to its right. On the right half of the sign, a vertical black arrow is shown curving up and to the right above the word "ONLY."
  • The third sign is shown as another pole-mounted R3-8 sign to the right of the highway and is marked as optional.
  • The fourth sign assembly is shown as the same sign assembly as the first, except without the distance on the third line.
  • North of the fourth sign assembly, the broken white line between the two rightmost lanes is shown changing to a dotted white line. A white two-direction arrow pointing straight ahead and to the right is shown marked on the third lane from the left, and a white arrow curving to the right is shown marked on the right lane. These markings are repeated twice more in advance of the gore.
  • The fifth sign is shown as another pole-mounted R3-8 sign to the right of the highway.
  • The sixth sign is shown as another pole-mounted R3-8 sign to the right of the highway and is marked as optional.
  • North of the sixth sign assembly and in advance of the gore, the dotted white line between the two rightmost lanes is shown changing to a solid white line.
  • The seventh sign assembly is shown at the theoretical gore, extending over the solid white line separating the two rightmost lanes. It is shown as the same sign assembly as the first, except with the distance on the third line and with the words "EXIT ONLY" between two diagonal arrows pointing up and to the right on the yellow panel.
  • A small horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend is shown in the gore between the right exit lanes and the through lanes. The sign shows the word "EXIT" on the top line above the numeral "18" to the left of a short diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right.

The seven signs and sign assemblies are shown at specific dimensioned distance from the theoretical gore and from each other:

  • The seventh sign is shown at the theoretical gore.
  • The sixth sign is shown at a distance of 800 ft. MIN in advance of the seventh sign.
  • The fifth sign is shown at a distance of 800 ft. MIN in advance of the sixth sign, and a fixed distance of 800 ft. beyond the fourth sign.
  • The fourth sign is shown at a fixed distance of 1/2 Mile in advance of the seventh sign.
  • The third sign is shown at a distance of 800 ft. MIN in advance of the fourth sign.
  • The second sign is shown at a distance of 800 ft. MIN in advance of the third sign, and a fixed distance of 800 ft. beyond the first sign.
  • The first sign is shown at a fixed distance of 1/2 Mile in advance of the fourth sign.
