This figure shows guide signs for a split with dedicated lanes.
The figure shows segments of one direction of a vertical highway labeled I-495 at the bottom of the figure, depicted with four lanes, with the travel direction from the bottom to the top of the figure. At the bottom of the figure, the lanes are separated from each other by broken white lines. The broken white line between the second and third lanes from the left is then shown changing to a dotted wide white line. Near the top of the figure, this dotted wide white line is shown changing to a solid wide white line in advance of the gore, where the highway is shown with a Y-shaped divergence of two lanes to the left fork (labeled I-270), separated by a broken white line, and two lanes to the right fork (labeled I-495), separated by a broken white line.
Nine horizontal rectangular green signs and sign assemblies with white legends and borders are shown along the highway, as well as two Interstate route sign assemblies.
The first sign assembly is shown near the bottom of the figure where the lanes are divided by broken white lines. It is shown at a dimensioned distance of 1 mile in advance of the second sign assembly. It is shown located over the highway and consists of two sign assemblies in a horizontal array:
- The left sign is shown located above the broken white line that separates the two leftmost lanes. It shows, on the top line, a red and blue Interstate route shield on which the white numerals "270" are shown to the left of the word "NORTH," the word "Frederick" on the second line, the words "2 MILES" on the third line, and a horizontal rectangular yellow panel with a black border and legend on the bottom line. The words "EXIT ONLY" in black are shown between two short downward-pointing black arrows on the yellow panel. A smaller green horizontal rectangular plaque is shown above the top left side of the left sign. It shows the word "LEFT" in black on a horizontal rectangular yellow panel on the top line and "EXIT 17" on the bottom line.
- The right sign is shown located above the broken white line that separates the two rightmost lanes. It shows, on the top line, a red and blue Interstate route shield on which the white numerals "495" are shown to the left of the word "EAST," the word "Baltimore" on the middle line, and two downward-pointing vertical white arrows with short shafts on the bottom line.
North of the first sign assembly, the broken white line between the second and third lanes from the left is shown changing to a wide dotted white line. At this point, which is shown at a dimensioned distance of 1/2 mile in advance of the third assembly, the second sign assembly is shown over the highway. It is shown as the same as the first, except the distance on the third line of the left sign is shown as "1 MILE" instead of "2 MILES."
The third sign assembly is shown further north and at a dimensioned distance of 1/2 mile in advance of the theoretical gore. It is shown as the same as the first, except there is no distance on the third line of the left sign.
North of the third sign assembly, the dotted wide white line between the second and third lanes from the left is shown changing to a solid wide white line in advance of the gore. The fourth sign assembly is shown over the highway at the theoretical gore. It is shown as the same as the first, except, on the left sign, there is no distance on the third line and short diagonal arrows pointing up and to the left are shown on the yellow panel instead of downward-pointing arrows, and on the right sign, short diagonal arrows pointing up and to the right are shown instead of downward-pointing arrows.
A horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend is shown in the gore between the right and left forking lanes. The sign shows the word "EXIT" on the top line above a short diagonal arrow pointing up and to the left that is to the left of the numeral "17."
Along the right fork, a sign assembly is shown to the right of the highway. It is shown as a red and blue Interstate route shield on which the white numeral "495" is shown. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "East" in white letters and a white border on a blue background.
Along the left fork, a sign is shown to the right of the highway. It is shown as a red and blue Interstate route shield on which the white numeral "270" is shown. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "North" in white letters and a white border on a blue background.
