Figure 2G-13. Example of Signing for a Direct Entrance Ramp to an HOV Lane from a Park-and-Ride Facility and a Local Street

This figure shows an example of signing for a direct entrance ramp to an HOV lane from a park-and-ride facility and a local street.

A legend shows a black arrow indicating the direction of travel on the highway and a white arrow indicating the reverse flow direction.

The figure shows a horizontal two-way local street with an access from the north to a horizontal rectangular park-and-ride facility. The access is shown as two lanes, with one lane in each direction, separated by a solid double yellow lines and with islands separating the access lanes from the rest of the park-and-ride facility. A white stop line is shown where the exiting access lane intersects the local street. The access lane is shown exiting the park-and-ride facility to the south, narrowing to one lane wide, curving to the east, and directly entering a horizontal HOV lane. White HOV diamond symbols are shown on the pavement as well as arrows identifying this segment of the access lane as reversible in direction of traffic flow. The direct entrance is shown crossing over three general purpose lanes of a divided highway with a westbound direction of travel and joining an eastbound HOV lane that is shown south of the westbound lanes and north of three general purpose lanes with an eastbound direction of travel. White HOV diamond symbols are shown on the pavement of the HOV lane as well as arrows identifying the HOV lane as reversible in direction of traffic flow.

Nine signs and sign assemblies are shown:

  • The first sign is shown at the top right of the figure. It is shown to the right of the local street and facing a westbound direction of travel. The sign is shown as a vertical rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. The top third of the sign is shown as a black panel with a white diamond outline symbol centered horizontally. This panel is shown above the word "EAST" on the top line, a red and blue Interstate shield for I-86 on the second line, the words "HOV LANE " on the third line, and a right-angle arrow pointing up and to the left on the bottom line. This sign is shown as a variable distance prior to the second sign.
  • The second sign is shown as an R3-13a sign to the right of the local street farther west than the first sign. The distance between this sign and the third sign is noted as "varies" as is the distance between this sign and the entrance to the park-and-ride facility. The sign is shown as a horizontal rectangular white sign that shows the white HOV diamond symbol on a black rectangular background in the top left corner. It shows the words "HOV 2+ ONLY" in black on the first line, the words "2 OR MORE PERSONS" in black on the second line, and "PER VEHICLE" in black on the third line, and the words "6 AM – 9 AM MON – FRI" in black on the bottom line.
  • The third sign is shown to the right of the local street farther west of the second sign and opposite the entrance to the park-and-ride facility. The sign is shown as the same as the first sign except a horizontal arrow pointing to the left is shown instead of a right-angle arrow.
  • The fourth sign assembly is shown to the right of the local street just beyond the third sign and opposite the combined entrance and exit to the park-and-ride facility facing the traffic exiting from the park-and-ride facility to the local street. It is shown as a sign assembly composed of a horizontal rectangular blue plaque with a white border and the word "TO" in white. This plaque is shown above a horizontal rectangular blue plaque with a white border and the word "EAST" in white. This plaque is shown above a red and blue Interstate shield for I-86. The Interstate shield is shown above a horizontal rectangular blue plaque with a white border and a horizontal arrow pointing to the left in white.
  • The fifth sign assembly is shown to the right of the local street to the west of the combined entrance and exit to the park-and-ride facility. It is shown facing westbound traffic. It is shown as the same sign assembly as the fourth sign assembly except a vertical arrow pointing straight ahead is shown instead of the arrow pointing to the left.'
  • The sixth sign is shown to the right of the entrance into the park-and-ride facility, facing traffic entering the facility. It is shown as the same sign as the first sign except a vertical arrow pointing straight ahead is shown instead of a right-angle arrow.
  • The seventh sign is shown to the right of the exit from the park-and-ride facility to the access to the HOV lane, facing traffic exiting the park-and-ride facility. It is shown as the same sign as the first sign except the words "HOV LANE ENTRANCE" are shown instead of a right-angle arrow.
  • The eighth sign is shown as an R3-14 sign mounted over the roadways of the exit from the park-and-ride facility, at the exit from the park-and-ride facility. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular white sign with a black border and legend. A white diamond outline symbol on a black panel in the upper left quadrant of the sign is shown to the left of the words "HOV 2+ ONLY" in large letters on two lines above a lane control sign denoting the lane as open. It is shown as a downward-pointing vertical arrow in the black square, with a shaft of five green dots leading to an arrowhead composed of nine green dots.
  • The ninth sign assembly is shown mounted over the HOV lane just east of the entrance of the HOV lane from the park-and-ride facility. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. The top portion of the sign is shown as a white panel with a white diamond outline symbol on a vertical rectangular black panel to the left of the words "HOV EXITS" in black. This panel is shown above a white square with the numeral "15" in black to the left of the numeral "7" on the top line and a white square with the numeral "2" in black to the left of the words "Downtown" to the left of the numeral "9." The numerals are shown vertically aligned near the right edge of the sign. A smaller horizontal rectangular yellow plaque with a black border and the word "LEFT" in black is shown above the top left side of the sign. A note states: "For access-restricted facilities. Destinations may be augmented to accompany routes on Interchange Sequence signs (see Figure 2E-31)."

The following notes are included:

  1. The minimum vehicle occupancy requirement on the sign may vary for each facility.
  2. See Chapter 3D for pavement markings.
  3. Warning signs are not shown.
  4. Sign locations are approximate.
  5. Additional signs may be required to direct drivers from the surrounding streets into the park-and-ride lot and HOV lane.
  6. Additional signs are required on the adjoining surface streets to inform non-HOVs that they should not enter the HOV facility.
  7. This figure illustrates a reversible HOV lane with a direct access ramp.
  8. The guide signs directing local street traffic to the HOV lane should include the word ENTRANCE when the direct access ramp does not traverse a park-and-ride facility.
