Figure 2G-27. Example of Signs for a Direct Access Ramp between Managed Lanes on Separate Freeways

This figure shows an example of signs for a direct access ramp between managed lanes on separate freeways.

A legend shows a black arrow indicating the direction of travel on the highway.

The figure shows segments of a vertical HOV lane, labeled "I-25 SB HOV Lane." An exit ramp, labeled "Ramp to I-76 EB Managed Lane or I-76 EB General Purpose Lanes," is shown curving to the left from the HOV lane, which continues straight ahead. The direction of travel is from the bottom to the top of the figure.

A series of six signs and sign assemblies are shown from the bottom to the top of the figure:

  • The first sign is shown mounted over the HOV lane at a dimensioned distance of 1 mile in advance of the second sign. It is shown with the note: "For access-restricted facilities." It is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with white letters and a white border. At the top of the sign, the words "EXPRESS EXITS" are shown on one line. Underneath these words, a horizontal white line extends from the left border to the right border, separating the sign into two horizontal portions. In the lower portion of the sign, a red and blue Interstate shield for I-76 is shown to the left of the word "EAST," which is to the left of the word "LEFT" in black on a horizontal yellow rectangle, which is to the left of the numeral "2" on the top line. On the bottom line, the word "Broadway" is shown to the left of the numeral "5." The two numerals are shown with the final digit aligned vertically near the right edge of the sign.
  • The second sign is shown mounted over the HOV lane. It is shown at a dimensioned distance of ½ mile in advance of the third sign. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with white letters and a white border. At the top of the sign, the words "EXPRESS EXIT" are shown on one line. Underneath these words, a horizontal white line extends from the left border to the right border, separating the sign into two horizontal portions. In the lower portion of the sign, a red and blue Interstate shield for I-76 is shown to the left of the word "EAST" centered on the top line, and the words "1 MILE" are centered on the bottom line. A smaller horizontal rectangular yellow plaque with a black border and the word "LEFT" in black is shown above the top left side of the sign. The word "EXPRESS" in white is shown on the road surface between the second and third sign assemblies.
  • The third sign is shown mounted over the HOV lane. It is shown at a dimensioned distance of ½ mile in advance of the beginning of the left exit ramp. It is shown as the same sign as the second sign except the words "1/2 MILE" are shown instead of the words "1 MILE."
  • The fourth and fifth signs are shown in a horizontal array extending over the left exit ramp and the HOV through lane. It is shown at the gore where the two lanes split. A dashed white line is shown across the HOV left exit ramp and ending at the gore. The fourth sign, on the left, over the exit ramp, is shown as the same as the second sign assembly except a short diagonal arrow pointing up and to the left is shown instead of the words "1 MILE." The fifth sign, on the right, over the HOV lane, is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with white letters and a white border. At the top of the sign, the words "EXPRESS LANE" are shown on one line. Underneath these words, a horizontal white line extends from the left border to the right border, separating the sign into two horizontal portions. In the lower portion of the sign, a red and blue Interstate shield for I-25 to the left of the word "SOUTH" centered on the top line above a short downward-pointing vertical arrow centered on the bottom line.
  • The sixth sign is shown mounted in the gore between the left exit ramp and the HOV through lane. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. The words "EXPRESS EXIT" are shown on two lines above a short diagonal arrow pointing up and to the left.

Beyond the gore, the word "EXIT" in white is shown on the road surface of the left exit ramp and the word "EXPRESS" in white is shown on the road surface of the HOV through lane.

The following notes are included:

  1. See Chapter 3D for pavement markings.
  2. Sign locations are approximate.
  3. The managed lane could be barrier-separated, buffer-separated, or contiguous.
