Figure 3J-1. Examples of Longitudinal Rumble Strip Markings

This figure illustrates three examples of longitudinal rumble strip markings.

A legend shows a black arrow indicating the direction of travel in the lanes and a series of closely spaced small, vertical rectangles, indicating a rumble strip.

The figure shows three examples of segments of horizontal roadways. Each roadway segment is shown as a two-lane roadway with a solid double yellow center line. A solid white edge line is shown on the outside edge of each lane. Arrows show that the direction of travel is one lane in each direction.

A note states: "Edge line may be located alongside the rumble strip (Option A) or on the rumble strip (Option B). Center line markings may also be located on a center line rumble strip (Option C)."

Option A is labeled "Edge line not on rumble strip." A series of closely spaced vertical rectangles, representing a rumble strip, are shown to the outside of each white edge line.

Option B is labeled "Edge line on rumble stip." Each white edge line is shown superimposed on a series of closely spaced vertical rectangles, representing a rumble strip.

Option C is labeled "Center line on rumble stip." The solid double yellow center line is shown superimposed on a series of closely spaced vertical rectangles, representing a rumble strip.
