Re: Request for Official Interpretation

Dear Sir/Madam,

There has been recent debate among some of us in the pavement markings industry whether pavement markings words and symbols applied with gaps is in compliance with the MUTCD.

The MUTCD displays example drawings of markings as solid. Historical practice in Washington, Wyoming, Idaho and Montana Departments of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration has been to accept gaps. Additionally, stencil manufacturers manufacture gapped stencils listed in their catalogs as MUTCD compliant.

Would you please clarify this for us? Please call if you have any questions.

Sincerely,
