Dear Mr. Fischer:

Thank you for your March 17 letter addressed to Ms. Shelley J. Row regarding a 4-year time extension for continued experimentation with the "RV Friendly" symbol on motorist service signs to help drivers of large recreational vehicles. Please note that the Director for the Office of Transportation Operations has changed.

We have reviewed the report summarizing the findings of your initial experimentation. We are pleased that you had positive response to this symbol and your request to expand the experimentation area is approved with one exception. The length of the time extension is not appropriate for experimentation and might be considered authorization to use a non-standard traffic control device for an extensive period of time. Acceptable time periods for experimentation are limited to 2 years or less. Please revise the experimentation plan to reflect an experimentation period not to exceed 2 years in length. We also note that in the summary findings report a suggestion was made to enlarge the "RV Friendly" symbol. We recommend that if you consider enlarging the "RV Friendly" symbol, the size should not be larger than the letter size used for the motorist service messages.

We are keeping the same official ruling number 2-515(E) and ask that you refer to this number in any future correspondence. We look forward to receiving notification of the implementation dates and to receiving your semiannual and final reports. To expedite the process, you may fax the revised information to Ms. Linda Brown at 202-366-3225.

Sincerely yours,

Regina S. McElroy
