Dear Mr. Fischer:

Thank you for your April 21 letter requesting permission to experiment with an "RV" Friendly Symbol added to business logos of specific service signs. This experimentation would evaluate on-site business "RV" guide signing as a beneficial aid to the safety and convenience of drivers of large recreational vehicles. Your research project has been assigned an official Request to Experiment number of 2-515(E)–"RV" Friendly Symbol Logo and Guide Signing. Please refer to this number in future correspondence.

Your request has been reviewed and found to be consistent with the guidelines detailed in Section 1A.10 of the MUTCD with the following required additions to the experimentation:

  1. On-site "RV" Friendly signing of each business itself must be included in the experimentation. Please modify your request to include guide signing with the same "RV" Friendly symbol (guidance of the RV driver).
    1. at the point where the driver departs the public road and enters each designated commercial facility (business); and
    2. within each business to guide the RV driver to the location of "RV" friendly parking spaces.
The format for designation of the "RV" Friendly vehicle parking would be in a like manner as that for handicapped parking in terms of sign placement and appropriate pavement markings.
  2. The size of the letters "RV" in the symbol of 6" must be increased to 8" in order to conform to the requirements for freeway guide signing.

Your request to experiment with "RV" Friendly symbol and guide signing is approved subject to the additions identified above. We look forward to receiving notifications of implementation dates and to your semiannual progress reports and final report. To expedite the process, you may fax the additional information to 202-366-3225.

If you have questions or wish additional information, please feel free to call Mr. Fred Ranck, Safety/Design Engineer, Federal Highway Administration’s Resource Center at Olympia Fields, Illinois. His telephone number is 708-283-3545.

Sincerely yours,

Vincent P. Pearce (for)
