Dear Ms. Reiss:
Thank you for your e-mail message dated June 20 requesting an interpretation of the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD) regarding the use of the word "shifted" in Paragraph 5 of Section 6F.72. Specifically, you are asking if replacing the word "shifted" with the word "relocated" would improve the clarity of this paragraph.
It is the Federal Highway Administration's official interpretation that the word "shifted" in Paragraph 5 of Section 6F.72 refers to the intentional movement of the devices to a new position because of changing conditions in the temporary traffic control zone. We will revise the language in this paragraph to clarify its meaning in next edition of the MUTCD.
For recordkeeping purposes, we have assigned the following official interpretation number and title: "6(09)-014 (I) — Clarification of Section 6F.72." Please refer to this number in any future correspondence regarding this topic.
Thank you for your interest in improving the clarity of the provisions contained in Part 6 of the MUTCD. Please contact Mr. Ken Wood at ken.wood@dot.gov or 708-283-4340 if you have any further questions concerning this matter.
Sincerely yours,
