Standard Highway Signs (SHS) PublicationThe new edition of Standard Highway Signs will contain the details for all signs and pavement markings included in the 11th Edition of the MUTCD, expanded sign design guidelines, and details for symbolic traffic and lane-control signal indications. It is taking some additional time to prepare the publication, and information is expected to be posted in the coming months. The SHS 2004 Edition is available from FHWA only in electronic form, on the MUTCD Web site. To obtain hard copies of the SHS book and cost information, contact ATSSA. The 2012 Supplement to the 2004 edition of SHS contains the new and significantly revised signs adopted in the 2009 edition of the MUTCD. Minimum Retroreflectivity Levels for Blue and Brown Traffic SignsThe Minimum Retroreflectivity Levels for Blue and Brown Traffic Signs report describes the research activities and consequent findings related to the development of recommendations for MR levels for white-on-blue signs and white-on-brown signs. This report also includes an investigation related to MR levels needed for complex visual conditions that include glare from oncoming headlamps and fixed roadway lighting. (Publication Number: FHWA-HRT-08-029) Innovative Intersection Safety Improvement Strategies and Management Practices: A Domestic ScanThe Innovative Intersection Safety Improvement Strategies and Management Practices: A Domestic Scan report provides information on best practices used in five areas in the country to enhance intersection safety. These practices focus on key elements of highway safety: safety management and comprehensive safety processes; traffic control devices for motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists; traffic operational practices; geometric design treatments; and enforcement practices and educational programs. The purpose of this document is to serve as an information and technology transfer tool on intersection safety practices used by State, regional and local transportation officials for the benefit of motorists, pedestrians and bicyclists. It is hoped that the distribution of this report will increase interest in intersection safety and encourage transportation officials to institute the various activities and treatments (or a variation thereof) contained within this document.
