Commissioner
Boston Transportation Department
One City HAll Plaza, Room 721
Boston, MA 02201

Dear Mr. Tinlin:

Thank you for your letter of September 27 transmitting the City's request to experiment (RTE) with bicycle shared lanes on Brighton Avenue in Boston. Your experiment would evaluate the effectiveness of dotted bike lane markings and green colored pavement with a shared bicycle lane, both of which do not comply with the 2009 Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.

We have reviewed your RTE. Your request for experimentation is approved and we look forward to receiving your semi-annual progress reports and your final evaluation report at the end of the study period.

For recordkeeping purposes, we have assigned the following official experimentation number and title: "9(09)-24 (E) – Shared Bike Lanes — Boston, MA." Please refer to this number in future correspondence.

Thank you for your interest in improving the operational capability and traffic safety for bicyclists through the use of innovative traffic control devices.

Sincerely yours,

/s/ Mark R. Kehrli
