Dear Mr. Soffian:

This letter is to inform you that your request to experiment with "SOLID GREEN BICYCLE LANES TO INCREASE COMPLIANCE AND BICYCLE SAFETY" in New York City has been approved.

We have reviewed the revised Evaluation Plan submitted to this office by email on April 25 and found it is satisfactory. We do have, however, one recommendation for your consideration. If the bicycle activity on any of the eight streets in the four boroughs in your plan includes heavy leisure bicycling, weekends for example, please consider gathering the proposed information for at least one site on a weekend.

Your experimentation request is approved through the end of June in 2006. For future reference purposes, we have assigned the following official experimentation number and title to your request: "9-79(E) - "New York City Green Bicycle Lane Markings." Please refer to this number in future correspondence.

Thank you for your interest in improving traffic safety for bicyclists through the use of the innovative green pavement markings. We look forward to receiving the reports detailed in your evaluation plan as the experimentation progresses.

If you have any questions about this response or during the course of your experimentation, please contact Mr. Hari Kalla at 202-366-5915 or Mr. Peter Rusch at 708-738-6735; peter.rusch@fhwa.dot.gov.

Sincerely yours,
