Signing for Designated Alternative Fuels Corridors Long Description for Figure 3
This figure illustrates examples of the use of Alternative Fuels Corridor and associated General Service sign assemblies along a freeway. The figure shows a schematic depiction of sign locations for one direction of travel on a freeway for which sighs are illustrated from bottom to top in two columns with a match line at the top of the left column matching the bottom of the right column. There are a series of five interchanges with varying geometry depicted along the freeway.
A series of nine sign assemblies are shown along the right side of the freeway. Starting from the bottom of the figure and proceeding upward, the nine sign assemblies shown are:
- After the first interchange, two examples of Alternative Fuels Corridor general service sign assemblies, separated by the word “OR” and labeled as Beginning of Corridor are shown. One sign assembly consists of a rectangular BEGIN plaque mounted above the square shaped ALTERNATIVE FUELS CORRIDOR sign with three smaller equally spaced square shaped General Service symbol signs representing three of the possible alternative fuels: Electric Vehicle Charging (EV), Compressed Natural Gas (CNG), and Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG). And one sign assembly consists of a rectangular BEGIN plaque mounted above the square shaped ALTERNATIVE FUELS CORRIDOR sign with the ALTERNATIVE FUELS plaque with the letters EV-CNG on the top line and LNG on the bottom line. Both sign assemblies are shown with blue backgrounds and white legends and borders.
- Prior to the second interchange, an example Alternative Fuels Corridor general service sign assembly is shown with one square shaped General Service symbol sign representing one of the possible alternative fuels – CNG with two rectangular plaques shown below separated by the word “OR” which read NEXT RIGHT or EXIT 63 B. The signs are shown with blue backgrounds and white legends and borders.
- After the third interchange, two examples of Alternative Fuels Corridor general service sign assemblies, separated by the word “OR” and labeled as Confirming Assembly Following a Major Interchange are shown. One sign assembly consists of the square shaped ALTERNATIVE FUELS CORRIDOR sign with three smaller equally spaced square shaped General Service symbol signs representing three of the possible alternative fuels: EV, CNG, and LNG. And one sign assembly consists of the square shaped ALTERNATIVE FUELS CORRIDOR sign with the ALTERNATIVE FUELS plaque with the letters EV-CNG on the top line and LNG on the bottom line. Both sign assemblies are shown with blue backgrounds and white legends and borders.
- Prior to the fourth interchange, an example Alternative Fuels Corridor general service sign assembly is shown and labeled as Separate Assembly for Last in Corridor to Avoid Confusion. A horizontal rectangular sign with a yellow background and black legend and border with the words LAST IN CORRIDOR is mounted above a square shaped General Service symbol sign with a blue background and white legends and borders representing one of the possible alternative fuels – CNG with two rectangular plaques shown below separated by the word “OR” which read NEXT RIGHT or EXIT 24.
- Prior to the fourth interchange, an example Alternative Fuels Corridor general service sign assembly is shown with two square shaped General Service symbol signs with a blue background and white legends and borders representing two of the possible alternative fuels – EV and CNG with two rectangular plaques shown below separated by the word “OR” which read NEXT RIGHT or EXIT 24.
- After the fourth interchange, an example Alternative Fuels Corridor general service sign assembly is shown and labeled as If Availability Changes Do Not Use Begin or End Plaques for Specific Fuels, which consists of the square shaped ALTERNATIVE FUELS CORRIDOR sign with two smaller equally spaced square shaped General Service symbol signs representing two of the possible alternative fuels: EV and LNG with blue backgrounds and white legends and borders.
- Prior to the fifth interchange, an example Alternative Fuels Corridor general service sign assembly is shown with a horizontal rectangular sign with a yellow background and black legend and border with the words LAST IN CORRIDOR mounted above two square shaped General Service symbol signs with a blue background and white legends and borders representing two of the possible alternative fuels – EV and LNG with blue backgrounds and white legends and borders with two rectangular plaques shown below separated by the word “OR” which read NEXT RIGHT or EXIT 11.
- Along the exit ramp of the fifth interchange, which has the crossroad labeled as END OF CORRIDOR, two example Alternative Fuels Corridor general service sign assemblies separated by the word “OR” are shown. One assembly consists of two square shaped General Service symbol signs with a blue background and white legends and borders representing two of the possible alternative fuels – EV and LNG with a directional arrow plaque shown below each symbol sign each with an arrow pointing left. And one sign assembly consists of two square shaped General Service symbol signs with a blue background and white legends and borders representing two of the possible alternative fuels – EV and LNG with a distance plaque which reads “2 MILES” and a directional arrow plaque with an arrow pointing left below the EV Charging symbol sign and a distance plaque which reads “1/2 MILE” and a directional arrow plaque with an arrow pointing right below the LNG symbol sign.
- After the exit ramp of the fifth interchange and before the crossroad, an example Alternative Fuels Corridor general service sign assembly is shown with a rectangular END plaque mounted above the square shaped ALTERNATIVE FUELS CORRIDOR sign with blue backgrounds and white legends and borders and labeled as Locate Beyond Exit but Before Next Entrance.
