Figure 2D-11. Example of Interchange Crossroad Signing for a One-Lane Approach

This figure shows an example of interchange crossroad signing for a one-lane approach.

The figure shows segments of an unnamed vertical roadway, with the travel direction from the bottom to the top of the figure. The roadway is shown crossing a multi-lane horizontal highway, I-57. At the top right of the figure, a black capital letter "N" is shown superimposed on a left-pointing horizontal black arrow, denoting the compass direction.

The interchange between the two is shown as a diamond-shaped ramp configuration. A series of signs and sign assemblies are shown for one direction of travel along the vertical roadway from the bottom to the top of the figure. Except as otherwise noted, all signs are horizontal rectangular green signs with white borders and lettering. They are shown to the right of the roadway.

There are five sets of sign assemblies shown on the vertical roadway:

  • At the bottom of the figure, a pair of signs are shown separated by the word "OR." The left sign is shown as a red and blue Interstate route shield for I-57. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "JCT" in white letters and a white border on a blue background. The right sign is a horizontal rectangular green sign with the word "JUNCTION" on the top line and the Interstate route shield for I-57 on the bottom line.
  • The second sign is shown closer to the interchange. It shows a vertical upward-pointing arrow to the left of the word "Champaign" above a horizontal white dividing line. Under the line, the word "Effingham" is shown to the left of a horizontal arrow pointing to the right.
  • Just prior to the right entrance ramp to the horizontal highway, three signs are shown separated from each other by the word "OR." The left sign shows the Interstate shield for I-57 in the center of the sign with the word "NORTH" above a vertical upward-pointing arrow to the left of the shield and the word "SOUTH" above a horizontal arrow pointing to the right to the right of the shield. The sign in the center is shown as a square sign. An upward-pointing vertical arrow is shown to the left of the word "NORTH", below which an Interstate shield for I-57 is shown centered horizontally. Below the shield, the word "SOUTH" is shown to the left of a horizontal arrow pointing to the right. The sign on the right is shown as a sign assembly composed of two signs. The left sign is shown as a red and blue Interstate shield for I-57. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "NORTH" in white letters and a white border on a blue background. Below it, a plaque is shown with an upward-pointing vertical white arrow. The right sign is shown as the same sign configuration except that the word "SOUTH" replaces the word "NORTH" and the arrow is shown as a right-pointing horizontal arrow.
  • Mid-way between the right entrance ramp and the point where the vertical roadway passes over the horizontal highway, a pair of signs are shown separated by the word "OR." The sign on the left is shown as a red and blue Interstate route shield for I-57. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "NORTH" in white letters and a white border on a blue background. Below it, a plaque is shown with a right angle white arrow pointing up and to the left. The sign on the right is shown as a vertical horizontal green sign with the word "NORTH" on the top line, the Interstate route shield for I-57 on the middle line, and a right angle white arrow pointing up and to the left on the bottom line.
  • Beyond the crossover, a sign is shown just prior to the right exit ramp from the horizontal highway. This sign is shown as a horizontal rectangular sign. A left-pointing horizontal arrow is shown to the left of an Interstate shield for I-57, which is to the left of the word "NORTH" on the top line, and the word "Champaign" is shown on the bottom line. Another sign is shown on the left ramp to the horizontal highway. This sign is an assembly comprised of a red and blue Interstate route shield for I-57, above which is shown a plaque with the word "NORTH" in white letters and a white border on a blue background, and below the Interstate shield is shown a plaque with a left-pointing horizontal arrow.
