2009 Edition Part 2 Figure 2E-12. Example of Signing for a Two-Lane Intermediate or Minor Interchange Exit with Option and Auxiliary Lanes
Figure 2E-12. Example of Signing for a Two-Lane Intermediate or Minor Interchange Exit with Option and Auxiliary Lanes
This figure shows an example of signing for a two-lane intermediate or minor interchange exit with option and auxiliary lanes.
The figure shows segments of one direction of a vertical highway depicted with three lanes, with the travel direction from the bottom to the top of the figure. At the bottom of the figure, the lanes are separated from each other by broken white lines. In the middle of the figure, a fourth lane is added to the right. A dotted white line separates this lane from the former right lane. At the top of the figure, the broken white line between the two rightmost lanes is shown changing to a solid white line, and two lanes are shown curving to the right, to the right of a theoretical gore shown with white chevron markings. The left lane, a center lane, and a third lane are shown continuing straight, to the left of the gore, and are shown separated by broken white lines.
Five signs and sign assemblies are shown along the highway:
- The first sign assembly is shown near the bottom of the figure where the lanes are divided by broken white lines. It is shown at a dimensioned distance of 1/2 Mile in advance of the second sign assembly. It is shown as a pole-mounted sign to the right of the highway and is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. It shows the words "Northern Blvd" on the top line, the word "Greenvale" on the middle line, and the words "1 MILE" on the bottom line. A smaller horizontal rectangular green plaque with white letters and border is shown above the top right of the sign and shows the words "EXIT 23."
- The second sign assembly is shown further north, in advance of the addition of a fourth lane. It is shown at a dimensioned distance of 1/2 Mile in advance of the theoretical gore. It is shown as a pole-mounted sign to the right of the highway and is the same as the first sign assembly except with the words "1/2 MILE" instead of the words "1 MILE."
- Further north, a fourth lane is added. A dotted white line separates the new right lane from the third lane from the left. A white two-direction arrow pointing straight ahead and to the right is shown marked on the third lane from the left, and a white arrow curving to the right is shown marked on the right lane. The third sign is shown at this point. It is shown as a pole-mounted R3-8 sign to the right of the highway. It is shown as a square white sign with a black border and legend. On the left half of the sign, a vertical black arrow is shown with two arrowheads: one on the left curving up and to the left and one pointing upward. A short black vertical line is shown to its right. On the right half of the sign, a vertical black arrow is shown curving up and to the right above the word "ONLY."
- Further north, the dotted white line between the two rightmost lanes is shown changing to a solid white line. A white two-direction arrow pointing straight ahead and to the right is shown marked on the third lane from the left, and a white arrow curving to the right is shown marked on the right lane. The fourth sign is shown at this point. It is shown as another pole-mounted R3-8 sign to the right of the highway and is marked as optional.
- The fifth sign assembly is shown at the theoretical gore, extending over the solid white line separating the two lanes exiting to the right. It is shown as the same sign assembly as the first, except two short white diagonal arrows pointing up and to the right replace the distance on the third line.
- A small horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend is shown in the gore between the right exit lanes and the through lanes. The sign shows the word "EXIT" on the top line above the numeral "23" to the left of a short diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right.
