Figure 6H-14. Haul Road Crossing (TA-14)
This figure illustrates two examples of a haul road crossing. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 14. A note states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."
The first example on the top half of the page shows traffic control on a haul road using temporary traffic control signals. This example shows a vertical two-lane roadway with one lane of traffic in each direction. A downward-pointing black arrow in the left lane and an upward-pointing arrow in the right lane denote the direction of traffic. The opposing lanes are shown separated by a broken yellow line. A shoulder is shown to the right of each travel lane. The shoulders are shown separated from the lanes by a solid white line. A horizontal haul road is shown intersecting the vertical roadway at the top of the example.
At the bottom of the example, a solid yellow line labeled Temporary Pavement Marking (optional) begins to the right of the broken yellow line. To the right of the shoulder of the northbound lane, a black inverted "T" is shown denoting a sign. The sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD WORK AHEAD" in black. Opposite this sign, on the left side of the shoulder of the southbound travel lane, a horizontal rectangular orange sign labeled optional is shown with a black border and the words "END ROAD WORK" in black. It is shown facing southbound traffic. The Road Work Ahead sign is shown at a dimensioned distance C in advance of a vertical rectangular white sign with a black border shown to the right of the shoulder. The sign shows the words "DO NOT PASS" in black. Opposite this sign, on the left side of the southbound shoulder, a longitudinal pennant-shaped orange sign with a black border is shown with the words "NO PASSING ZONE" in black. The sign is shown facing northbound traffic. The Do Not Pass sign is shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of a sign assembly to the right of the shoulder. This sign assembly is composed of a yellow warning light labeled optional mounted above a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and a symbol of a traffic signal, with red, yellow, and green circles from top to bottom inscribed on a black vertical rectangle. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of a vertical rectangular white sign to the right of the shoulder with a black border and the words "STOP HERE ON RED" in black above a diagonal black arrow pointing down and to the left. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance of 12 to 45 m (40 to 150 ft) in advance of the intersection of the vertical roadway with the haul road. Adjacent to the Stop Here On Red sign, the optional solid yellow temporary pavement marking is shown ending, and a white stop line is shown extending across the northbound lane.
At the intersection with the haul road, four pairs of black circles with emanating arrow symbols are shown, denoting overhead mounted traffic signals. One pair faces each travel lane and shoulder for each direction of travel on the vertical roadway, and one pair faces each direction of travel on the travel lane of the haul road and to the left of the road. Each is shown on the far side of the intersection for all four directions. On the haul road, a diagonally striped orange and white bar, denoting a Type III barricade, is shown both to the left and right of the intersection with the vertical roadway. They are labeled "See Note 7." At the far left of the haul road, the words "Haul Road" are shown in the center of the haul road.
The second example in the lower half of the page shows traffic control on a haul road using flaggers. This example shows the same vertical two-lane roadway with one lane of traffic in each direction. A downward-pointing black arrow in the left lane and an upward-pointing arrow in the right lane denote the direction of traffic. The opposing lanes are shown separated by a broken yellow line. A shoulder is shown to the right of each travel lane. The shoulders are shown separated from the travel lanes by a solid white line. A horizontal haul road is shown intersecting the vertical roadway at the top of the example.
At the bottom of the example and to the right of the shoulder of the northbound lane, a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border is shown with the words "ROAD WORK AHEAD" in black. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance C in advance of a Do Not Pass sign to the right of the right shoulder. Opposite this sign, on the left side of the shoulder of the southbound lane, a horizontal pennant-shaped orange sign with a black border is shown with the words "NO PASSING ZONE" in black. At this point, a solid yellow line to the right of the broken yellow line, labeled Temporary pavement marking (optional), is shown beginning and continuing to the top of the example. The Do Not Pass sign is shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of a diamond-shaped orange sign shown to the right of the shoulder with a black border and a black symbol of a flagger. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of a horizontal red symbol for a flagger on the right shoulder. The flagger symbol is shown at a dimensioned distance of 9 m (30 ft) in advance of the intersection of the vertical roadway with the haul road.
On the haul road, a diagonally striped orange and white bar, denoting
a Type III barricade, is shown both to the left and right of the
intersection with the vertical roadway.
They are labeled "See Note 4." At the far left of the
haul road, the words "Haul Road" are shown in the center
of the haul road.
