Figure 6H-20. Detour for Closed Street (TA-20)

This figure illustrates an example of a detour for a closed street. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 20. A note states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."

This figure shows two vertical two-lane roadways intersecting two horizontal two-lane roadways. The vertical roadway on the right is denoted as Main Street. All of the roadways are shown as two lanes with a broken yellow line between the intersections. Black arrows show the direction of traffic flow as one lane in each direction.

At the bottom of the figure and to the right of the right lane of the rightmost vertical roadway, a black inverted "T" is shown denoting a sign. The sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD CLOSED AHEAD" in black. Beyond this sign at a dimensioned distance B, a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "DETOUR AHEAD" in black is shown to the right of the roadway. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the intersection with the lower horizontal roadway. On the north side of this intersection, an orange and white striped Type III barricade is shown extending across both lanes of Main Street. Attached to the barricade, a horizontal rectangular white sign with a black border is shown with the words "ROAD CLOSED" in black above a horizontal rectangular orange on black DETOUR arrow sign, pointing to the left. Directly behind the barricade, a square black and white diagonally striped box is shown, denoting a work space, across both lanes of Main Street. On the north side of the work space, another Type III barricade is shown with a horizontal rectangular white sign with a black border and the words "ROAD CLOSED" in black attached to it and facing the southbound traffic on Main Street. Farther north on Main Street, two more Type III barricades are shown blocking Main Street. One is shown across the northbound lane of Main Street and is staggered below the second barricade. The second barricade is shown on the south side of the intersection with the upper horizontal roadway across the southbound lane and is shown with a sign assembly attached to it facing the southbound traffic on Main Street. The assembly is composed of a horizontal rectangular white sign with a black border and the words "ROAD CLOSED TO THRU TRAFFIC" in black above a DETOUR arrow sign that points to the right. On Main Street, on the north side of the intersection with the upper horizontal roadway, a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border is shown with the words "END DETOUR" in black and facing northbound traffic. To the right of the southbound lane of Main Street, north of the intersection with the upper horizontal roadway, two signs are shown facing southbound traffic on Main Street. One is shown as a Road Closed Ahead sign. Beyond it at a dimensioned distance B, a Detour Ahead sign is shown. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the intersection with the upper horizontal roadway.

On the upper horizontal roadway, west of the intersection with Main Street, a vertical horizontal orange sign assembly is shown facing eastbound traffic. It shows the words "MAIN ST" in black in one panel above a sign with the word "DETOUR" and a black left-pointing arrow. On the east side of the intersection of the upper horizontal roadway with the leftmost vertical roadway, another Main St Detour sign assembly is shown with a left-pointing arrow facing westbound traffic.

On the leftmost vertical roadway, south of the intersection with the upper horizontal roadway, another Main St Detour sign is shown with a right-pointing arrow facing northbound traffic. On this same vertical roadway, north of the intersection with the lower horizontal roadway, another Main St Detour sign is shown with a left-pointing arrow facing southbound traffic.

On the lower horizontal roadway, east of the leftmost vertical roadway, another Main St Detour sign is shown with a right-pointing arrow facing westbound traffic. Farther east on the lower horizontal roadway, at the intersection with Main Street, another Main St Detour sign is shown with a right-pointing arrow facing eastbound traffic.

To the right of the southbound lane of Main Street south of the lower horizontal roadway, an End Detour sign is shown.
