Figure 6H-23. Left Lane Closure on Far Side of Intersection (TA-23)

This figure illustrates an example of left lane closure on the far side of an intersection. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 23. A note states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."

This figure shows a vertical four-lane roadway intersecting a horizontal two-lane roadway. Black arrows on the vertical roadway indicate that traffic in the two left lanes is southbound and traffic in the two right lanes is northbound. Black arrows indicate that the direction of traffic on the horizontal roadway is one lane in each direction. A solid double yellow line is shown separating the opposing lanes on both roadways. Broken white lines are shown separating the lanes on the vertical roadway. Solid white lines are shown extending across the lanes in advance of each intersection. The solid double yellow lines are shown ending at these lines.

At the bottom of the figure and to the right of the northbound lanes, a black inverted "T" is shown denoting a sign. The sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD WORK AHEAD" in black. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance C in advance of another sign to the right of the roadway. This sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "LEFT LANE CLOSED AHEAD" in black. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of another sign to the right of the roadway. This is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and a thick, vertical straight black line on the right; a thick, vertical black line on the left that angles toward the right half way up; and a thin, short vertical dotted black line between them that is the length of the vertical section of the line on the left. It is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of a series of orange squares, denoting channelizing devices. These devices are shown beginning at the double yellow line and tapering to the right to the broken white line for a dimensioned distance L. Where the devices join the broken white line, a square white sign with a black border is shown in the left lane with the words "LEFT LANE MUST TURN LEFT" in black. An identical sign is also shown to the right of the roadway. A row of channelizing devices is shown beginning at a dimensioned distance of 30 m (100 ft) beyond these signs on the broken white line and continuing to the white line on the near side of the intersection.

On the far side of the intersection and in the left lane, a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel labeled optional is shown with a right-pointing yellow arrow in front of an orange and white diagonally striped Type III barricade. The barricade is shown directly in front of a vertical rectangular black and white diagonally striped box, denoting a work space, that is the width of the left lane. It is shown surrounded on the left, right, and back by channelizing devices. Beyond the work space, a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border is shown to the right of the roadway with the words "END ROAD WORK" in black.

At the top of the figure and to the right of the southbound lanes on the vertical roadway, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown. It is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the northern limit of the work space in the northbound lane. On the south side of the intersection, an End Road Work sign is shown to the right of the roadway.

On the horizontal roadway to the right of the intersection, an End Road Work sign is shown on the south side of the roadway facing eastbound traffic. On the north side of the roadway, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the intersection. On the west side of the intersection, an End Road Work sign is shown on the north side of the roadway facing westbound traffic. On the south side of the roadway, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown facing eastbound traffic. It is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the intersection.
