Figure 6H-38. Interior Lane Closure on Freeway (TA-38)

This figure illustrates an example of an interior lane closure on a freeway. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 38. A note at the bottom of the figure states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."

The figure shows one side of a vertical roadway with three lanes of traffic in one direction. Upward-pointing black arrows in each lane denote the direction of trafficl. The lanes are shown separated from each other by broken white lines. Left and right shoulders are shown next to the two outside lanes. The left shoulder is shown separated from the left lane by a solid yellow line. The right shoulder is shown separated from the right lane by a solid white line.

At the bottom of the figure and outside the left and right shoulders, two black inverted "Ts" are shown denoting signs. Thesigns are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders and the words "ROAD WORK 1 MILE" in black and the metric alternate "1.6 km." These signs are shown at a dimensioned distance C in advance of another set of signs outside the left and right shoulders. These are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders and the words "LEFT LANE CLOSED ½ MILE" in black and the metric alternate "800 m." These signs are shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of two more signs outside the left and right shoulders. They show a thick, vertical straight line on the right; a thick, vertical line on the left that angles toward the right half way up; and a thin, short vertical dotted line between them that is the length of the vertical section of the line on the left, denoting a lane ends. These signs are shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel with a yellow directional arrow pointing to the right that is shown spanning the left shoulder.

At the left edge of the left shoulder where the lane ends sign is shown, a series of orange squares denoting channelizing devices is shown tapering diagonally to the right for a dimensioned distance L to the solid yellow line separating the shoulder from the left lane. This shoulder taper is labeled optional. The channelizing devices are shown tapering diagonally to the right to the broken white line separating the left and middle lanes. At this point, a sign is shown to the right of the right shoulder. It is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border showing a vertical black arrow that curves to the left around a black median and a vertical black arrow on the right. The channelizing devices are shown continuing along the broken white line separating the left and middle lanes for a dimensioned distance 2L. The devices then are shown tapering diagonally to the left to the solid yellow line separating the shoulder and left lane for a dimensioned distance ½ L. A solid temporary yellow edge line is shown just to the right of this series of channelizing devices.

Channelizing devices labeled optional are also shown along the broken white line separating the middle and right lanes at a dimensioned distance of 30 m (100 ft) MAX. in advance of the northern limit of the 2L dimension. Channelizing devices beginning at the northern limit of the 2L dimension along the broken white line between the middle and right lanes are shown tapering diagonally to the left for a dimensioned distance ½ L and paralleling the series of channelizing devices to their left. Just to the left of the series of devices in the middle lane, a solid temporary white edge line is shown. These two series of channelizing devices are shown separated from each other by a dimensioned distance of 4.9 m (16 ft) MIN.

At the northern limit of the 2L dimension, a sign is shown in the middle lane where the channelizing devices are shown beginning to taper to the left. It is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and two black diagonal arrows, one pointing down and to the left and the other down and to the right. It is shown in advance of a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel with a horizontal two-direction yellow directional arrow. It is shown in the center of the middle lane in advance of a vertical rectangle with diagonal black stripes, denoting a work space, shown in the center of the middle lane. Channelizing devices are shown running along the left and right sides of the work space along the solid temporary white edge lines to the outside of the broken white lane lines. Just beyond the work space and outside the left and right shoulders, two horizontal rectangular orange signs with black borders are shown with the words "END ROAD WORK" in black.
