Figure 6H-42. Work in Vicinity of Exit Ramp (TA-42)

This figure illustrates two examples of work in the vicinity of an exit ramp. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 42. A note states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."

Both examples show a vertical three-lane roadway. Upward-pointing black arrows in each lane denote the direction of travel. The lanes are shown separated from each other by broken white lines. A shoulder is shown to the left of each left lane and to the right of each right lane. The left shoulders are shown separated from the left lanes by a solid yellow line. The right shoulders are shown separated from the right lanes by a solid white line. At the top of each example, an exit ramp is shown to the right of the right lane curving to the right.

Near the bottom of both examples and to the outside of both the left and right shoulders, two black inverted "Ts" are shown denoting signs. The signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders and the words "ROAD WORK 1 MILE" in black and the metric alternate "1.6 km." Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance C, another set of signs is shown to the outside of both the left and right shoulders. These signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders and the words "RIGHT LANE CLOSED ½ MILE" in black and the metric alternate "1.6 km." Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance B, another set of signs is shown to the outside of both the left and right shoulders. These signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders. They show a thick, vertical straight line on the left; a thick, vertical line on the right that angles toward the left half way up; and a thin, short vertical dotted line between them that is the length of the vertical section of the line on the right, denoting a lane ends. Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance A, a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel with a yellow directional arrow pointing to the left is shown in the right-hand shoulder. Just in advance of this sign, a series of orange squares denoting channelizing devices is shown tapering from the outside edge of the shoulder to the solid white line separating the shoulder from the right lane. This shoulder taper is labeled optional.

On both examples, beyond the shoulder taper, a solid temporary white edge line is shown tapering from the solid white line between the right lane and the shoulder to the left to the broken white lines between the middle and right lanes. This taper is shown as a dimensioned distance L. A series of channelizing devices is shown on this temporary line. The solid white line and the channelizing devices are shown continuing along the vertical line between the middle and right lanes for a dimensioned distance of 300 m (1,000 ft). To the right of this vertical line, a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border is shown with the words "EXIT OPEN" in black and labeled optional.

From this point on, the two examples differ. The first example shows an area of the right-hand lane, right shoulder, and shoulder of the exit ramp covered with diagonal black and white lines, denoting a work space. A work space is also shown in the left-hand lane adjacent to the gore beyond the exit ramp. The vertical solid white line between the middle and right lanes is shown tapering to the right for a dimensioned distance L. A series of channelizing devices is shown on this line. The line and channelizing devices then are shown continuing along the curve of the exit to the left of the work space and the top of the figure. From the point where the solid white line and channelizing devices are shown tapering to the right, a second solid temporary white line and series of devices also are shown tapering to the right. This second line is shown at a dimensioned distance of 30 m (100 ft) from the first line. Another temporary solid white line with channelizing devices is shown continuing straight between the middle and right lanes and past the work space at the top of the figure. At the point where these two white lines are shown forming a gore, a sign is shown in this gore. The sign is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a black border and the word "EXIT" in white above a diagonal white arrow pointing up and to the right. Beyond this sign on the exit ramp, the temporary white line on the left is shown changing to a solid temporary yellow edge line with channelizing devices on it for the remainder of distance L. The channelizing devices are shown stopping at the end of dimensioned distance L, and the solid yellow line is shown continuing to the left of the exit ramp.

The second example shows a work space on the exit ramp, in front of the gore, and continuing in the right-hand lane adjacent to the gore beyond the exit ramp. The vertical solid white line between the middle and right lanes is shown tapering to the right for a dimensioned distance L. A series of channelizing devices is shown on this line. The white line then is shown continuing to taper to the right edge of the shoulder to the right of the exit ramp and continuing along the shoulder to the top of the figure. From the point where the solid white line and channelizing devices are shown tapering to the right, a second solid temporary white line and series of devices are shown also tapering to the right. This second line is shown at a dimensioned distance of 30 m (100 ft) from the first line. Another solid temporary white line with channelizing devices is shown continuing straight between the middle and right lanes and past the work space to the top of the figure. The channelizing devices are shown stopping at the end of dimensioned distance L, and the solid temporary yellow edge line is shown continuing to the right of the work space along the left edge of the exit ramp.
