Figure 8B-7. Examples of Highway-Rail Grade Crossing Pavement Markings
This figure illustrates two examples of highway-rail grade crossing pavement markings.
A note states: "Refer to Figure 8B-6 for placement."
The first example shows highway-rail grade crossing alternative (narrow) pavement markings. It shows a vertical section of one lane of a roadway with a solid yellow center line. At the bottom of the roadway section, a white transverse line is shown that extends across the lane. It is shown as a dimension of 600 mm (24 in) wide. Beyond it, two white "R's" are shown that together are shown as a dimension of 1 m (3.3 ft) wide. At a dimension of 0.5 m (1.6 ft) beyond the "RR," a white "X" is shown marked in the center of the lane. The lines making up the "X" are shown as a dimension of 400 mm (16 in) wide. The overall width of the "X" is shown as a dimension of 2 m (6.6 ft). The height of the "X" is shown as a dimension of 6.1 m (20 ft). At the top of the roadway section and beyond the "X," another white transverse line is shown as a dimension of 600 mm (24 in) wide. The distance from the far edge of one transverse line to the far edge of the other is shown as a dimensioned distance of 18 m (60 ft). The distance from the far edge of the first transverse line to the bottom edge of the "X" is shown as a dimensioned distance of 7 m (23 ft). The distance from the top edge of the "X" to the far edge of the second transverse line is shown as a dimensioned distance of 4.9 m (16 ft).
The second example shows highway-rail grade crossing pavement markings. It shows a vertical section of one lane of a roadway with a solid yellow center line. In the center of the lane, a white "X" is shown with a white "R" on each side of it. The lines making up the "X" are shown as a dimension of 400 mm (16 in) wide. The height of each "R" is shown as a dimension of 1.8 m (6 ft). The overall height of the "X" is shown as a dimension of 6.1 m (20 ft). The overall width of the "X," including the "R's," is shown as a dimension of 2.4 m (8 ft) and noted: "Width may vary according to lane width."
