Figure 2E-23. Signing of Closely Spaced Interchanges Using Interchange Sequence Signs

This figure shows 11 examples of signing of closely spaced interchanges using interchange sequence signs.

The figure shows segments of one direction of a vertical four-lane freeway with a median, with the direction of travel from the bottom to the top of the figure. The lanes are shown separated from each other by broken white lines. It shows four diamond-shaped interchanges and three reference location signs (RLS). The two-lane roads shown aligned horizontally on the page and with interchanges on the freeway are labeled (from the bottom to the top of the page) Park Street, Fitch Way, Kenston Avenue, and Tolenas Street. The lanes are shown separated from each other by broken yellow lines. A series of horizontal rectangular green signs and plaques, all with white legends and borders, are shown along the freeway from the bottom to the top of the figure. Only signs for traffic traveling in one direction (from the bottom to the top of the figure) are shown.

The first sign is shown located over the right lane of the freeway where an exit is shown curving to the right to Park St. It shows the words "Park St" to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right. A smaller, horizontal rectangular plaque is shown above the top right of the sign. It shows the words "EXIT 20."

The second sign is shown located on the overpass of Park St. over the right lane of the freeway. It shows the words "Fitch Way" on the top line and the words "3/4 MILE" on the second line. A smaller, horizontal rectangular plaque is shown above the top right of the sign. It shows the words "EXIT 21." Just beyond the overpass of Park St., RLS 21 is shown located in the median between the northbound and southbound lanes of the freeway.

The third sign is shown located between Park St. and Fitch Way in the median between the northbound and southbound lanes. It shows the words "Fitch Way" to the left of the numeral "1/2" on the top line, the words "Kenston Ave" to the left of the numeral "1" on the middle line, and the words "Tolenas St" to the left of the numerals "1 ½" on the bottom line. The three numerals are shown with the final digit aligned vertically near the right edge of the sign.

The fourth sign is shown located over the right lane of the freeway where an exit is shown curving to the right to Fitch Way. It shows the word "Fitch" on the top line and the word "Way" on the bottom line to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right. A smaller, horizontal rectangular plaque is shown above the top right of the sign. It shows the words "EXIT 21."

The fifth sign is shown located on the overpass of Fitch Way over the right lane of the freeway. It shows the words "Kenston Ave" on the top line and the words "1/2 MILE" on the second line. A smaller, horizontal rectangular plaque is shown above the top right of the sign. It shows the words "EXIT 22 A."
