Figure 6H-5. Shoulder Closure on Freeway (TA-5)

This figure illustrates shoulder closure on a freeway. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 5. A note states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure.”

This figure shows a vertical four-lane divided highway with two lanes of traffic in each direction. Downward-pointing black arrows in the two left lanes and upward-pointing arrows in the two right lanes denote the direction of traffic as southbound and northbound, respectively. The southbound and northbound lanes are shown separated by a median, shown by a white strip between the opposing roadways. A shoulder is shown to the left and right of each travel lane. The right shoulders are shown separated from the right lanes by a solid white line. The two lanes in each direction are shown separated from each other by a broken white line. The left shoulders on the median side of the roadways are shown separated from the left lanes by a solid yellow line.

At the bottom of the figure and to the right of the shoulder of the right, northbound lane, a black inverted "T" is shown denoting a sign. The sign shown is a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD WORK AHEAD" in black. Another Road Work Ahead sign is shown opposite this one to the left of the left shoulder. These signs are shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of a sign assembly to the right of the right shoulder. The sign assembly is shown as composed of a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "RIGHT SHOULDER CLOSED" in black above a horizontal rectangular orange supplemental plaque with the distance "1000 FT" or the metric alternate "300 m." This sign is shown in advance of a sign assembly to the right of the right shoulder composed of a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "RIGHT SHOULDER CLOSED" in black above a horizontal rectangular orange supplemental plaque with a black border and the distance "NEXT X MILES" or the metric alternate "NEXT X km." This sign assembly is shown at a dimensioned distance of 150 m (500 ft) in advance of the beginning of a series of channelizing devices, denoted by orange squares. The distance from the Right Shoulder Closed sign to the first channelizing device is shown as a dimensioned distance A.

The channelizing devices are shown beginning at the far right edge of the right shoulder and tapering to the solid white line separating the shoulder from the right lane for a distance of 1/3 L The devices are then shown along the solid white line for a short distance. To the right of the channelizing devices, a row of temporary barriers is shown to the right of the right shoulder and beginning where the channelizing devices begin. These barriers are shown tapering at an angle from outside the shoulder to the white line separating the shoulder from the right lane. On the leading edge of the barriers, a crash cushion (see Section 6F.82) is shown, denoted by a semicircle. The barrier and lights shown on the barrier parallel to the roadway are labeled optional.

Where the channelizing devices and the tapered temporary barriers meet on the white line separating the shoulder from the right lane, a row of temporary barriers and yellow lights labeled optional is shown placed just to the right of and paralleling the white line.
