Figure 6H-24. Half Road Closure on Far Side of Intersection (TA-24)

This figure illustrates an example of half road closure on the far side of an intersection. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 24. A note states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."

This figure shows a vertical four-lane roadway with two lanes of traffic in each direction intersecting a horizontal two-lane roadway with one lane of traffic in each direction. On the vertical roadway, downward-pointing black arrows in the two left lanes and upward-pointing black arrows in the two right lanes denote the direction of traffic. On the horizontal roadway, left-pointing black arrows in the upper lane and right-pointing black arrows in the lower lane denote the direction of traffic. The opposing lanes on both roadways are shown separated by a double yellow line. The same-way traffic lanes on the vertical roadway are shown separated by a broken white line.

At the bottom of the figure and to the right of the northbound lanes, a black inverted "T" is shown denoting a sign. The sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD WORK AHEAD" in black. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance C in advance of another sign shown to the right of the roadway. This is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "THRU TRAFFIC MERGE LEFT" in black. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of another sign. This is shown as a square white sign with a black border to the right of the roadway with the words "RIGHT LANE MUST TURN RIGHT" in black. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the intersection with the horizontal roadway. An identical sign is shown at the intersection to the right side of the roadway. In the intersection, pavement markings of dotted white and double yellow lines are shown that extend from the respective lane markings south of the intersection. The markings are labeled optional. They are shown tapering to the left across the intersection to join the broken white and double yellow lines, respectively, in the southbound lanes on the far side of the intersection.

On the far side of the intersection and extending across both northbound lanes, an orange and white diagonally striped Type III barricade is shown. A square white sign labeled optional with a black border is shown on the left side of the barricade and facing eastbound traffic. This sign shows a vertical black arrow bent at a 90-degree angle pointing to the left. A red circle and diagonal slash running from the upper left to the lower right are shown superimposed on the arrow, denoting no left turn. The barricade is shown directly in front of a horizontal rectangular black and white diagonally striped box, denoting a work space, that is shown as the width of both northbound lanes. To its left, a series of orange squares is shown, denoting channelizing devices. The devices also are shown extending for a short distance to the right of the barricade along the north side of the horizontal roadway. Beyond the work space, a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border is shown with the words "END ROAD WORK" in black.

At the top of the figure and to the right of the southbound lanes on the vertical roadway, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown facing southbound traffic. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance C in advance of another sign to the right of the roadway. This is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "LEFT LANE CLOSED AHEAD" in black. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of another sign. This is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and a thick, vertical straight black line on the right; a thick, vertical black line on the left that angles toward the right half way up; and a thin, short vertical dotted black line between them that is the length of the vertical section of the line on the left. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of a series of channelizing devices. The devices are shown beginning to taper to the right from the solid double yellow lines to the broken white line for a dimensioned distance L. At this point, a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel labeled optional is shown in the left-hand southbound lane, with the yellow arrow pointing to the right. At this point, the channelizing devices are shown continuing along the solid double yellow line to a dimensioned distance ½ L in advance of the near limit of the work space. From this point, the devices are shown tapering to the right for a dimensioned distance ½ L and joining the broken white line, forming a median. To the left of the arrow panel, the devices are shown continuing straight along the solid double yellow line through a buffer space labeled optional, joining the devices along the broken white line, continuing past the work space in the northbound lane, and ending at the intersection. At the end of the devices, back-to-back signs labeled optional are shown. One sign facing southbound traffic is shown as a No Left Turn symbol sign, and the second one facing northbound traffic is shown as a vertical rectangular white sign with a black border. At the top left corner of the sign, a depiction of the plan view of the nose of a traffic island is shown. An upward-pointing arrow is shown on the sign, curving to depict movement to the right of the nose of the island.

On the horizontal roadway to the right of the intersection, an End Road Work sign is shown on the south side of the roadway facing eastbound traffic. On the north side of the roadway, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the intersection. On the west, far side of the intersection, a No Right Turn symbol sign is shown on the north side of the roadway facing westbound traffic. Beyond it, an End Road Work sign labeled optional is shown. On the south side of the horizontal roadway, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown facing eastbound traffic. It is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the intersection. At the intersection, a No Left Turn symbol sign, labeled optional, is shown facing eastbound traffic.
