Figure 6H-27. Closure at Side of Intersection (TA-27)

This figure illustrates an example of closure at the side of an intersection. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 27. A note states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."

This figure shows a vertical two-lane roadway intersecting a horizontal two-lane roadway. Black arrows on the roadways indicate that the direction of travel is one lane in each direction. The opposing lanes on both roadways are shown separated by a solid double yellow line.

At the bottom of the figure and to the right of the northbound lane, a black inverted "T" is shown denoting a sign. The sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD WORK AHEAD" in black. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of another sign to the right of the roadway. This sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and a symbol of a flagger in black, which is shown at a dimensioned distance A in advance of a series of orange squares, denoting channelizing devices, in the southbound lane. In the southwest quadrant of the intersection, a horizontal rectangle with black and white diagonal stripes is shown, denoting a work space. On the far side of the intersection, near the top of the figure, a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border and the words "END ROAD WORK" in black is shown to the right of the roadway facing northbound traffic.

At the top of the figure and to the right of the southbound lane on the vertical roadway, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of another sign to the right of the roadway. This is shown as a flagger symbol sign at a dimensioned distance A in advance of a series of orange squares, denoting channelizing devices. The channelizing devices are shown beginning on the right edge of the southbound lane and tapering to the double yellow line for a dimensioned distance of 30 m (100 ft) MAX. At this point, a black circle identifying an orange flag tree and labeled optional is shown in the middle of the southbound lane.

On the southwest side of the intersection in the southbound and eastbound lanes, the work space is shown. On the east, north, and west sides of the work space, orange and white diagonally striped Type III barricades are shown. The channelizing devices are shown continuing along the solid double yellow line from the end of the taper on the north side of the intersection along the line and to the intersection, then beginning again and passing the work space in the southbound lane. They are shown continuing along the double yellow solid line to a point where the devices are shown tapering back to the right edge of the southbound roadway. The length of the taper is shown as a dimensioned distance of 30 m (100 ft) MAX., and it is shown ending at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the flagger symbol sign in the northbound direction. Beyond the taper, an End Road Work sign is shown to the right of the roadway facing southbound traffic.

On the horizontal roadway to the right of the intersection, an End Road Work sign is shown on the south side of the roadway facing eastbound traffic. On the north side of the roadway, facing eastbound traffic, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of another flagger symbol sign shown on the north side of the roadway at a dimensioned distance A in advance of the intersection. On the west side of the intersection facing westbound traffic, an End Road Work sign is shown on the north side of the roadway. On the south side of the roadway, a Road Work Ahead sign is shown facing eastbound traffic. It is shown at a dimensioned distance B in advance of another flagger symbol sign shown on the north side of the roadway at a dimensioned distance A in advance of a series of channelizing devices. The channelizing devices are shown beginning on the right side of the eastbound lane and tapering to the double yellow line for a dimensioned distance of 30 m (100 ft) MAX. A black circle identifying an orange flag tree and labeled optional is shown in the middle of the eastbound lane near the end of the taper of the channelizing devices. The devices are shown continuing straight from the end of the taper on the solid double yellow line and into the intersection and to the end of the work space. On the east side of the intersection facing eastbound traffic, an End Road Work sign is shown on the south side of the roadway.
