Figure 6H-44. Work in Vicinity of Entrance Ramp (TA-44)
This figure illustrates two examples of work in the vicinity of an entrance ramp. A legend under the figure states that this is Typical Application 44. A note states "Note: See Tables 6H-2 and 6H-3 for the meaning of the symbols and/or letter codes used in this figure."
Both examples show a vertical two-lane roadway. Upward-pointing black arrows in each lane denote the direction of travel. The lanes are shown separated from each other by broken white lines. A shoulder is shown to the left of each left lane and to the right of each right lane. The left shoulders are shown separated from the left lanes by a solid yellow line. The right shoulders are shown separated from the right lanes by a solid white line. Near the bottom of each example, an entrance ramp is shown to the right of the right lane curving to the left and merging with the right lane.
Near the bottom of both examples and to the outside of both the left and right shoulders, two black inverted "Ts" are shown denoting signs. The signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders and the words "ROAD WORK 1 MILE" in black and the metric alternate "1.6 km." Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance C, another set of signs is shown to the outside of both the left and right shoulders. These signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders and the words "RIGHT LANE CLOSED ½ MILE" in black and the metric alternate "800 m." Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance B, another set of signs is shown to the outside of both the left and right shoulders. These signs are shown as diamond-shaped orange signs with black borders. They show a thick, vertical straight line on the left; a thick, vertical line on the right that angles toward the left half way up; and a thin, short vertical dotted line between them that is the length of the vertical section of the line on the right, denoting a lane ends. Beyond these signs at a dimensioned distance A, a horizontal rectangular black arrow panel with a yellow directional arrow pointing to the left is shown in the right shoulder. Just in advance of this sign, a series of orange squares denoting channelizing devices is shown tapering from the outside edge of the shoulder to the solid white line separating the shoulder from the right lane. This shoulder taper is labeled optional.
On both examples, beyond the shoulder taper, a solid temporary white edge line is shown tapering from the solid white line between the right lane and the shoulder to the left to the broken white lines between the left and right lanes. This taper is shown as a dimensioned distance L. A series of channelizing devices is shown on this temporary line. The solid white line and the channelizing devices are shown continuing along the vertical line between the left and right lanes. A second series of devices is shown beginning at the same point and continuing along the line separating the right lane from the shoulder until they are shown reaching the point where the entrance ramp is shown merging with the roadway and becoming the acceleration lane.
From this point on, the two examples differ. The first example shows a sign mid-way along the entrance ramp on the right edge of the right shoulder of the ramp. The sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and the words "ROAD WORK AHEAD" in black. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance of 150 m (500 ft) in advance of the point where the entrance ramp is shown merging with an acceleration lane to the right of the right lane. Just beyond this merge point, a vertical rectangle with diagonal black and white stripes denoting a work space is shown in the right lane. The solid temporary white edge line and a series of channelizing devices between the left and right lanes are shown continuing to the left of the work space. A solid temporary yellow edge line and channelizing devices between the right and acceleration lanes are shown continuing to the right of the work space. At the point where the acceleration lane is shown tapering to the left to join the right lane, a sign is shown in the gore. The sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and an upward-pointing arrow to the left of a dividing line that changes from solid to dotted and a curved arrow to the right of the dotted line. Just beyond this sign, the acceleration lane is shown merging with the right lane, and the solid temporary yellow edge line and channelizing devices are shown ending where they join the solid white line between the left and right lanes. Beyond this point, at the top of the figure, a sign is shown to the right of the right shoulder. The sign is shown as a horizontal rectangular orange sign with a black border and the words "END ROAD WORK" in black.
The second example shows a sign at the bottom of the entrance ramp along the right edge of the right shoulder of the ramp. The sign is shown as a Road Work Ahead sign. This sign is shown at a dimensioned distance of 150 m (500 ft) in advance of another sign mid-way along the entrance ramp along the right edge of the right shoulder of the ramp. This sign is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and a symbol of an upward-pointing black arrow above a triangular red and white yield sign. The sign is shown at a dimensioned distance of 150 m (500 ft) in advance of another sign. This is shown as a downward-pointing equilateral triangle with a wide red border and the legend "YIELD" in red on a white background. It is shown on the acceleration lane to the right of the solid temporary white edge line to the right of the point where the entrance ramp is shown merging with the roadway and becoming a temporary acceleration lane to the right of the left lane.
At the point where the entrance ramp is shown merging with the roadway, the solid temporary yellow edge line to the left of the ramp is shown continuing until it joins the solid temporary white edge line between the left and right lanes. A series of channelizing devices is shown on this line as well as on the temporary white edge line. In the gore shown formed by these two lines joining, a sign is shown. This is shown as a diamond-shaped orange sign with a black border and an upward-pointing black arrow and a curved line joining the shaft of the arrow on the right side. At the point where the entrance ramp is shown merging with the roadway, the solid temporary white edge line along the right edge of the ramp is shown tapering to the left, away from the right edge of the original acceleration lane. A series of channelizing devices is shown on the white line.
At the point where the temporary gore is shown forming, the white line and channelizing devices are shown continuing vertically for a short distance and then tapering to the left for a dimensioned distance L. At that point, a vertical rectangle with diagonal black and white stripes denoting a work space is shown in the remainder of the original acceleration and right lanes. The solid temporary white edge line and channelizing devices are shown continuing vertically to the left of the work space, tapering to the right, and ending at the solid white line between the right lane and shoulder. Beyond this point, at the top of the figure, a sign is shown to the right of the right shoulder. The sign is shown as an End Road Work sign.
