Figure 2G-6. Examples of Overhead or Post-Mounted Preferential Lane Entrance Direction Signs

This figure shows four examples of overhead or post-mounted preferential lane entrance direction signs.

A note states: "Examples of HOV Lane (diamond symbol) signs are illustrated. For other types of preferential lanes, the appropriate symbol or word message (see Section 2G.03) is displayed in white on the black background of the left-hand portion of these signs."

E8-2 (overhead only) is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. A white diamond outline symbol on a black panel is shown on the left third of the sign. This panel is shown to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing to the left and up to the left of the words "HOV LANE ENTRANCE" on two lines.

E8-2a (post-mounted only) is shown as identical to E8-2 except the arrow is shown below the word message.

A note states: "A changeable message sign may be incorporated into an overhead preferential lane guide sign to indicate the status of a reversible operation as shown in the following example:"

Two horizontal rectangular green signs with white borders and legends are shown. The sign is divided vertically by a white line that extends from the left edge of the sign to the right. On the top half of the sign, a white diamond outline symbol on a black panel is shown on the left third of the sign. This panel is shown to the left of the words "HOV LANE" on one line. On the bottom half of the sign, a changeable message sign is shown, represented by a black panel with a message composed of white dots:

  • The sign on the left is labeled "Lane Open" and shows an arrow pointing to the left and up to the left of the word "ENTRANCE," both composed of white dots on the black panel.
  • The sign on the right is labeled "Lane Closed" and shows the word "CLOSED" composed of white dots on the black panel.
