Figure 2G-10. Example of Signing for the Intermediate Entry to, Egress from, and End of Access-Restricted HOV Lanes

This figure shows an example of signing for the intermediate entry to, exit from, and end of access-restricted HOV lanes.

A legend shows an arrow indicating the direction of travel on the highway.

The figure shows one direction of travel on segments of a vertical highway with three general purpose lanes. They are shown as separated from each other by broken white lines. The direction of travel is from the bottom to the top of the figure. An HOV lane is shown on the left, separated from the general purpose lanes by two segments of barrier buffer, or contiguous access prohibition. The two segments are separated longitudinally by a wide dotted white line. At the top of the figure, the HOV lane tapers to the right and ends.

The HOV lane is shown with four white HOV diamond symbols on the HOV lane road surface.

A series of 10 signs are shown, from the bottom to the top of the figure, all of which are shown as mounted over the left general purpose lane, except as otherwise noted:

  • At the bottom of the figure, the first sign is shown as an E8-3 sign. It is shown at a dimensioned distance of ¼ mile prior to the second sign. The sign is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. A white diamond outline symbol on a black panel is shown on the left third of the sign. This panel is shown to the left of the words "HOV LANE ENTRANCE 1 MILE" on three lines. A smaller horizontal rectangular yellow plaque with a black border and the word "LEFT" in black is shown above the top left side of the sign.
  • The second sign is shown as an R3-13a sign at a dimensioned distance of ¼ mile prior to the third sign. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular white sign with the HOV diamond symbol in white on a black rectangular background in the upper left corner and the words "HOV 2+ ONLY" in black on the top line, the words "2 OR MORE PERSONS" in black on the second line, the words "PER VEHICLE" in black on the third line, and the words "6 AM – 9 AM" and "MON – FRI" in black on the fourth line.
  • The third and fourth signs are shown at a dimensioned distance of ½ mile prior to the fifth sign. The third sign is shown as an E8-6 sign mounted on the support of the fourth sign, to the left of the HOV lane. It is shown as a vertical rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. The top third of the sign is shown as a black panel with a white diamond outline symbol centered horizontally. This panel is shown above the word "TO" on the top line, a red and blue Interstate shield for I-610 on the middle line, and the words "1/2 MILE" on the bottom line".
  • The fourth sign is shown as an E8-3 sign, identical to the first except the words "1/2 MILE" are shown instead of the words "1 MILE."
  • The fifth sign is shown as an E8-5 sign mounted to the left of the HOV lane just prior to the point where the first segment of barrier ends. It is shown as a vertical rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. The top third of the sign is shown as a black panel with a white diamond outline symbol centered horizontally. This panel is shown above the word "TO" on the top line, a red and blue Interstate shield for I-610 on the middle line, and a short diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right on the bottom line.
  • The sixth sign is shown as an E8-2 sign at a dimensioned distance of 0.25 L to 0.5 L, where L is shown as the distance from the end of the first segment of barrier to the start of the second segment of barrier. The sign is shown as a horizontal rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. A white diamond outline symbol on a black panel is shown on the left third of the sign. This panel is shown to the left of the words "HOV LANE ENTRANCE" on two lines. A smaller horizontal rectangular yellow plaque with a black border and the word "LEFT" in black is shown above the top left side of the sign.
  • The seventh sign is shown as an R3-14 sign mounted over the HOV lane at the beginning of the second white barrier. This sign is shown as a horizontal rectangular white sign with the white HOV diamond symbol on a rectangular black background in the top left corner. The words "HOV 2+" in black are shown on the top line, the word "ONLY" in black on the second line, the words "6 AM – 9 AM MON – FRI" in black on the third line, and a downward-pointing vertical black arrow on the bottom line.
  • The eighth sign is shown as E8-1a sign mounted on the front of the second barrier. It is shown as a vertical rectangular green sign with a white border and legend. The top third of the sign is shown as a black panel with a white diamond outline symbol centered horizontally. This panel is shown above the words "HOV LANE" on two lines above a short diagonal arrow pointing down and to the left. A note states: "Barrier-separated facilities only."
  • The ninth sign is shown as an R3-12b sign mounted to the left of the HOV lane at a dimensioned distance of ½ mile prior to the 10th sign. It is shown as a vertical rectangular white sign with a black border and legend. The top third of the sign is shown as a black panel with a white diamond outline symbol centered horizontally. This panel is above the words "HOV LANE" on two lines above the words "ENDS 1/2 MILE" in smaller letters on two lines.
  • The 10th sign is shown as an R3-15b sign mounted over the HOV lane at the end of the second segment of barrier. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular white sign with a black border and legend. A white diamond outline symbol on a black panel on the left third of the sign is shown to the left of the words "HOV LANE ENDS" on three lines.

Several notes are included:

  1. Geometry is for illustrative purposes only; use locally applied geometric criteria.
  2. The minimum vehicle occupancy requirement and hours of operation on the sign may vary for each facility.
  3. See Chapter 3D for pavement markings.
  4. Warning signs not shown.
