Figure 2G-29. Example of Guide Signs for Separate Entrance Ramps to General-Purpose and Priced Managed Lanes from the Same Crossroad

This figure shows an example of guide signs for separate entrance ramps to general-purpose and priced managed lanes from the same crossroad.

The figure shows an unnamed vertical highway and I-495 running horizontally. I-495 is shown as a divided highway with two roadways traveling to the left and two roadways traveling to the right. The right roadways for both directions are labeled as general purpose lanes, and the left roadways as managed lanes. The interchange between the vertical highway and the horizontal I-495 is shown as a partial cloverleaf to the right of the vertical highway. At the interchange, the vertical highway is shown traveling from the bottom to the top of the figure and with an entrance ramp to the right of the highway from the managed lane of I-495 traveling to the right and an entrance ramp to the right of the vertical highway to the managed lane of I-495 traveling to the left.

A series of signs are shown for one direction of travel along the vertical highway from the bottom to the top of the figure. All signs are shown as rectangular green signs with white borders and lettering.

The figure shows eight signs on the vertical highway:

  • At the bottom of the figure, the first sign is shown to the right of the highway. It is shown at a dimensioned distance of 800 ft. MIN in advance of the second sign. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular sign with a red and blue Interstate shield for I-495 on the top line, the word "Chester" on the second line, the word "Wilmington" on the third line, and the words "JCT 1/2 MILE" on the bottom line.
  • The second sign is shown mounted over the vertical highway. It is shown at a dimensioned distance of 800 ft. MIN. in advance of the third sign and is labeled "optional." It is shown as a horizontal rectangular sign with a red and blue Interstate shield for I-495 to the left of the word "SOUTH" on the top line and the words "TO Wilmington" on the second line. Under this legend, a horizontal white line extends from the left border to the right border, separating the sign into two horizontal portions. On the top line of the lower portion of the sign, the word "EXPRESS" is shown to the left of a changeable message, represented by a black rectangle with the numeral "18" composed of white dots, to the left of the word "MINS." On the bottom line, the word "LOCAL" is shown to the left of a changeable message, represented by a black rectangle with the numeral "32" composed of white dots, to the left of the word "MINS."
  • The third sign is shown mounted over the vertical highway. It is shown at a dimensioned distance of 800 ft. MIN. in advance of the fifth sign. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular sign with a red and blue Interstate shield for I-495 below the word "SOUTH" and to the left of the words "EXPRESS LANE." A white rectangular panel with a black border and legend is shown at the bottom of the sign. A purple Toll Pass logo is shown to the left of the word "ONLY" on the top line, and the word "TO" to the left of the black numeral "4" on a white disk is shown to the left of a changeable message, represented by a black rectangle with the message "$2.25" in white, on the bottom line. To the right of this sign is shown the word "OR" and another sign. It is shown as the same as the other sign except that the words "KEEP LEFT" are shown under the I-495 shield and the words "EXPRESS LANE." This alternate sign is noted as for "Multi-lane approach only."
  • The fourth sign is shown beyond the third sign mounted to the right of the vertical highway at the entrance ramp to the I-495 northbound general purpose lanes with a travel direction to the right. The sign is shown as a horizontal sign with a short vertical arrow pointing straight ahead to the left of a red and blue Interstate shield for I-495, which is shown to the left of the word "SOUTH" on the top line and above the word "Wilmington." Below this legend, a horizontal white line is shown that extends from the left border to the right border. Below this dividing line, a red and blue Interstate shield for I-495 is shown to the left of the word "NORTH" on the top line and above the word "Chester" to the left of a right-pointing horizontal arrow on the bottom line.
  • The fifth and sixth signs are shown in a horizontal array over the vertical highway with a travel direction from the bottom to the top of the figure. They are shown just prior to the start of the overpass of the vertical highway over I-86. The fifth sign, on the left, is shown as a horizontal rectangular sign. The top part of the sign is shown as a purple panel with a Toll Pass logo to the left of the word "ONLY" in black on a white rectangle. This panel is shown above a horizontal white line that extends from the left border to the right border. Below this dividing line, a red and blue Interstate shield for I-495 is shown below the word "SOUTH" and to the left of the words "EXPRESS LANE" on the top line above a left-pointing horizontal arrow centered on the bottom line. The sixth sign, on the right, is shown as a horizontal rectangular sign with a red and blue Interstate shield for I-495 to the left of the word "SOUTH" on the top line, the word "Wilmington" on the middle line, and the words "NEXT RIGHT" on the bottom line.
  • The seventh sign is shown on the left side of the vertical highway at the entrance ramp to the managed lane of I-495 with a travel direction to the left. It is shown as a vertical rectangular sign with a purple Toll Pass logo on the top line, the word "ONLY" in black on a horizontal white rectangle on the second line, the word "SOUTH" above a red and blue Interstate shield for I-495 on the third line, the words "EXPRESS LANE" on the fourth and fifth lines, and a short diagonal arrow pointing down and to the left on the bottom line.
  • At the top of the figure, the eighth sign is shown mounted over the vertical roadway at the loop ramp entrance to the general purpose lane of I-495 with a travel direction to the left. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular sign with a red and blue Interstate shield for I-495 to the left of the word "SOUTH" on the top line above the word "Wilmington" to the left of a short diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right on the bottom line.
