2009 Edition Part 2 Figure 2C-3. Example of Advisory Speed Signing for an Exit Ramp
Figure 2C-3. Example of Advisory Speed Signing for an Exit Ramp
This figure shows two vertical lanes of a divided highway. The two lanes are separated from each other by a broken white line. Black inverted Ts denote signs.
Four notes are shown:
- See Table 2C-4 for advance placement distance guidelines
- See Table 2C-5 for the selection of horizontal alignment signs
- See Table 2C-6 for spacing of W1-8 signs
- A 30-mph advisory ramp speed and 40-mph advisory exit speed are shown for illustrative purposes only
Near the bottom of the figure, a deceleration lane tapers to the right of the right lane, leading to a right exit ramp. The deceleration lane runs parallel to the right lane and is separated from it by a dotted white line. Along the top third of the exit lane, the dotted white line splits in two to form a V-shaped island with forward-pointing white chevron markings on the pavement. The exit ramp then curves to the right into a semicircular shape.
At the point where the deceleration lane becomes parallel to the right lane, a W13-2 Exit Ramp sign is shown to the right of the deceleration lane. The sign is shown with the word "EXIT" and the legend "30 MPH." At this point an alternative sign is also shown, a W13-6 sign with the word EXIT, a horizontal black line, a 270-degree curving arrow, and the legend "40 MPH."
Beyond this sign and half-way to the island, a sign assembly is shown composed of a W1-11R sign with a right-curving semicircular arrow mounted above a W13-1P plaque with the legend "30 MPH."
Beyond this sign, at the point where the island begins, a W13-3 Ramp Speed sign is shown to the right of the deceleration lane. The sign is shown with the word "RAMP" and the legend "30 MPH." At this point an alternative sign is also shown, a W13-7 sign with the word RAMP, a horizontal black line, a 270-degree curving arrow, and the legend "30 MPH."
The deceleration lane then is shown curving to the right to become the exit ramp. In the gore between the mainline and the exit ramp, a sign assembly is shown. The assembly is comprised of an E5-1a sign with white words EXIT 23 B and a diagonally upward-pointing arrow, in 2 lines, on a green background, and an E13-1P plaque (with a note indicating this plaque is optional) with the words 30 MPH in black on one line on a yellow background. A note accompanying the E5-1a sign states "See Section 2E.37 for information regarding Exit Gore signs." To the right of the exit ramp, a sign assembly is shown composed of a W1-13R sign (shown as optional) with a symbol of a truck tipped to the left at a 45-degree angle mounted above a W13-1P plaque with the legend "30 MPH."
To the left of the exit ramp, a W1-8R sign is shown with a right-pointing black chevron. To the right of this sign, the word "OR" is shown and a W1-6R sign with a horizontal right-pointing arrow.
Farther along the curve, a W1-8R chevron sign is shown to the left of the roadway followed by five more farther along the curve.
