Figure 2E-34. Examples of Guide Signs for a Freeway-to-Freeway Interchange (Sheet 2 of 2)

This figure shows 30 guide signs for a freeway-to-freeway interchange on two sheets.

Sheet 2 shows 17 signs on a figure labeled "B - Example of Signing for Successive Exit Ramps with a Dropped Lane at the Second Exit."

The figure shows segments of one direction of a vertical highway depicted with three lanes, with the travel direction from the bottom to the top of the figure. At the bottom of the figure, the lanes are separated from each other by broken white lines. Farther north, the left and center lanes are shown continuing straight, to the left of a theoretical gore shown with white chevron markings, and are shown separated by broken white lines. Near the bottom of the figure, the broken white line between the center and right lanes is shown changing to a dotted wide white line. Near the top of the figure, this dotted white line is shown changing to a solid wide white line in advance of the theoretical gore between the center lane and right lane. The right lane then is shown angling to the right to become a right exit ramp, labeled "To I-42 Eastbound." Near the middle of the figure, a taper is shown from the right lane to an added (fourth) lane along the right side of the vertical highway leading to an additional right exit ramp. The added (fourth) lane is shown separated from the adjacent lane to its left by a dotted wide white line, which then changes to a solid wide white line in advance of a theoretical gore between the right lane and the right exit ramp. This exit ramp is labeled "To I-42 Westbound."

A series of horizontal rectangular green signs with white legends and borders are shown along the highway from the bottom to the top of the figure. At the top right of the figure, a black capital letter "N" is shown superimposed on a vertical black arrow pointing straight ahead, denoting the compass direction.

Seventeen signs or sign assemblies are shown on the vertical highway:

  • At the bottom of the figure, the first and second signs are shown in a horizontal array over the highway:
    • The first sign, on the left, is shown located above the broken white line that separates the left and center lanes. It is shown with the shield for Interstate 17 to the left of the word "NORTH" on the top line. Below it, the word "Miami" is shown on the middle line above two vertical white downward-pointing arrows with short shafts on the bottom line.
    • The second sign, on the right, is shown located above the right lane. It is shown with the shield for Interstate 42 centered on the top line above the word "Columbus" on the second line, the word "Springfield" on the third line, and the words "2 MILES" on the fourth line. Below these words, a horizontal rectangular yellow panel with a black border and legend is shown with the word "EXIT" to the left of a short vertical downward-pointing arrow to the left of the word "ONLY." A smaller horizontal rectangular green plaque is shown above the top right side of the sign. It shows the words "EXITS 215 A-B."
  • The third and fourth signs are shown in a horizontal array over the highway beyond where the broken white line between the center and right lanes is shown changing to a dotted white line:
    • The third sign, on the left, is shown located above the broken white line that separates the left and center lanes. It is shown as identical to the first sign.
    • The fourth sign, on the right, is shown located above the right lane. It is shown as identical to the second sign except the words "1 MILE" are shown instead of the words "2 MILES."
  • The fifth and sixth signs are shown in a horizontal array over the highway between the location of the third and fourth signs and the start of the taper into the additional (fourth) lane being added on the right:
    • The fifth sign, on the left, is shown located above the broken white line that separates the left and center lanes. It is shown as identical to the first sign.
    • The sixth sign, on the right, is shown located above the right lane. It is shown as identical to the fourth sign except that the words "1 MILE" have been removed.
  • The seventh, eighth, and ninth signs are shown in a horizontal array over the highway at the point where the taper changes into the full-width fourth lane:
    • The seventh sign is shown located above the broken white line that separates the two leftmost lanes. It is shown as identical to the first sign, except that it is noted as "optional."
    • The eighth sign is shown located above the lane that continues straight ahead past the first right exit. It is shown with the shield for Interstate 42 to the left of the word "EAST" on the top line above the word "Springfield" on the second line. Below these words, a horizontal rectangular yellow panel with a black border and legend is shown with the word "EXIT" to the left of a short vertical downward-pointing arrow to the left of the word "ONLY." A smaller horizontal rectangular green plaque is shown above the top right side of the sign. It shows the words "EXIT 215 B."
    • The ninth sign is shown located above the rightmost lane that becomes an exit ramp. It is shown with the shield for Interstate 42 to the left of the word "WEST" on the top line above the word "Columbus" on the second line. Below these words, a horizontal rectangular yellow panel with a black border and legend is shown with the word "EXIT" to the left of a short vertical downward-pointing arrow to the right and to the left of the word "ONLY." A smaller horizontal rectangular green plaque is shown above the top right side of the sign. It shows the words "EXIT 215 A."
  • The 10th, 11th, and 12th signs are shown in a horizontal array over the highway at the theoretical gore between the right lane that continues straight and the first right exit ramp:
    • The 10th sign is shown located above the broken white line that separates the two leftmost lanes. It is shown as identical to the first sign, except that it is noted as "optional."
    • The 11th sign is shown located above the right lane that continues straight ahead past the first right exit. It is shown as identical to the eighth sign.
    • The 12th sign is shown located above the first right exit ramp, which is labeled "To I-42 Westbound." It is shown as identical to the ninth sign except a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right is shown instead of a vertical downward-pointing arrow.
  • The 13th sign is shown in the gore between the right lane that continues straight ahead and the first right exit. It is shown as a small sign with the word "EXIT" above the words "215 A" to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right.
  • The 14th and 15th signs are shown in a horizontal array over the highway at the theoretical gore between the center lane that continues straight ahead and the second right exit ramp:
    • The 14th sign is shown located above the broken white line that separates the left and center lanes. It is shown as identical to the first sign.
    • The 15th sign is shown located above the second right exit ramp, which is labeled "To I-42 Eastbound." It is shown as identical to the ninth sign except a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right is shown instead of a vertical downward-pointing arrow.
  • The 16th sign is shown in the gore between the center lane that continues straight ahead and the second right exit ramp. It is shown as a small sign with the word "EXIT" above the words "215 B" to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right.
  • At the top of the figure, the 17th sign is shown to the right of the two lanes that continue straight ahead. It is shown as a red and blue Interstate route shield on which the white numeral "17" is shown. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "NORTH" in white letters and a white border on a blue background.
