Figure 2E-39. Examples of Guide Signs for a Diamond Interchange in an Urban Area
This figure shows five examples of diamond interchange guide signs in an urban area.
The figure shows segments of two roadways, I-74 running vertically and Lincoln Ave. running horizontally. The interchange between the two is shown as a diamond-shaped ramp configuration, located approximately at reference location sign 64 on I-74. At the top right of the figure, a black capital letter "N" is shown superimposed on a right-pointing horizontal black arrow, denoting the compass direction. At the bottom of the figure, a note states "See Figures 2D-11 through 2D-13 for examples of one-lane and multi-lane crossroad signing for diamond interchanges."
A series of six signs and sign assemblies are shown along westbound I-74 from the bottom to the top of the figure. Off-route movement is to the right. Except as otherwise noted, all signs and sign assemblies are horizontal rectangular green signs with white borders and lettering. They are shown to the right of the roadways, unless otherwise noted:
- At the bottom of the figure, two signs are shown separated by the word "OR" just beyond reference location sign 65, which is shown in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes. The left sign is shown with the words "Springfield EXITS" on the top line above a horizontal white dividing line. Under the line, the words "Lincoln Ave" are shown to the left of the numeral "1" on the top line, the words "Newton St" are shown to the left of the numeral "4" on the middle line, and the words "Green Ave" are shown to the left of the numeral "5" on the bottom line. The right sign shows the word "Springfield" on the top line and the words "NEXT 3 EXITS" on the bottom line
- The second sign is shown farther west. It shows the words "Lincoln Ave" on the top line and the words "1/2 MILE" on the bottom line. A smaller horizontal rectangular green plaque is shown above the top right side of the sign and shows the words "EXIT 63."
- The third sign is shown farther west and closer to the interchange. It shows the word "Lincoln" on the top line and the word "Ave" to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right on the bottom line. A smaller horizontal rectangular green plaque is shown above the top right side of the sign and shows the words "EXIT 63."
- The fourth sign is shown in the gore between the freeway and the right exit ramp to Lincoln Ave. (which is the lower right branch of the diamond). It shows the word "EXIT" on the top line and the numerals "63" to the left of a diagonal arrow pointing up and to the right on the bottom line. Reference location sign 64 is shown in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes just prior to the Lincoln Ave. overpass.
- Two signs separated by the word "OR" are shown on the fifth sign. It is shown on the exit ramp from westbound I-74 to Lincoln Ave., just prior to the intersection with Lincoln Ave. The left sign is shown with the words "Lincoln Ave" on one line. The right sign is shown with the words "Lincoln Ave" on the top line above a horizontal white line across the full width of the sign. Below the line, a vertical white line separates the bottom portion of the sign into left and right sections. In the left section, a short horizontal left-pointing arrow is shown to the left of the word "SOUTH." In the right section, the word "NORTH" is shown to the left of a short horizontal right-pointing arrow.
- The sixth sign is shown beyond the diamond interchange, near the top of the figure. It is shown as a red and blue Interstate route shield for I-74. Above it, a plaque is shown with the word "WEST" in white letters and a white border on a blue background. At the top of the figure, reference location sign 63 is shown in the median between the eastbound and westbound lanes.
