Figure 2F-6. Examples of Guide Signs for the Entrance to a Toll Highway on which Tolls are Collected Electronically Only

This figure shows examples of guide signs for the entrance to a toll highway on which tolls are collected electronically only.

The figure shows one direction of a vertical highway depicted with two lanes separated by a broken white line, with the travel direction from the bottom to the top of the figure. At the top of the figure, an exit ramp is shown angling to the right. Six signs and sign assemblies (with alternates) are shown mounted over the right lane of the highway except as otherwise noted, from the bottom to the top of the figure. Notes accompany each sign or sign assembly to indicate for which of four specific conditions the sign or assembly is appropriate:

Condition 1 - All tolls are billed through license plate recognition only. A registered toll account or ETC device is not needed.

Condition 2 - All tolls are billed through registered toll accounts only. All vehicles must be registered in an ETC account program.

Condition 3 - Tolls are billed through license plate recognition in which registration in a toll account program is not required. Toll payments are also accepted from registered toll accounts. Registered toll accounts might receive a discount from the toll amount displayed on the signs.

Condition 4 - Tolls are billed through license plate character recognition or registered toll accounts. Vehicles not registered in a toll account program are assessed a nominal processing fee in addition to the amount displayed on the signs.

The signs are shown as square and rectangular green guide signs with white borders and legends, except as otherwise noted:

  • The first sign assembly is shown at the bottom of the figure. It is shown as a square sign with the numeral "92" in black on a white disk to the left of the word "TOLL" in black on a horizontal yellow rectangle on the top line. The word "Plainsboro" is shown on the second line, the word "Dover" is shown on the third line, and the words "1 MILE" are shown on the bottom line. Above this sign is shown a smaller plaque with the words "EXIT 76" in white letters on green background. Notes indicate this sign is appropriate for conditions 1, 3, or 4. To the right of this sign, the word "OR" is shown and another sign assembly. This sign assembly shows the same sign and plaque as the first option except a purple panel with a white border is added to the top of the sign, below the plaque, with a purple Toll Pass logo with a white border shown to the left of the word "ONLY" in black on a white rectangle. A note indicates this sign is appropriate for condition 2.
