This figure shows examples of mainline toll plaza approach and canopy signing.

The first example is labeled "A - All Toll Plaza Lanes Attended (No Automatic or Electronic Collection Equipment)." It shows one direction of a vertical highway depicted with two lanes separated by a broken white line, with the travel direction from the bottom to the top of the figure. At the top of the figure, the two lanes are shown widening to five lanes separated by solid white lines, with a horizontal black bar depicting a toll plaza spanning the five lanes. Six signs are shown along the highway from the bottom to the top of the figure:

  • The first sign is shown as a W9-6 sign to the right of the right lane. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular yellow sign with a black border and legend. It shows the words "PAY TOLL 2 MILES CARS 75¢" on three lines, with a large numeral "2."
  • The second sign is shown as an overhead W9-6 sign located over the two lanes. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular yellow sign with a black border and legend. It shows the words "PAY TOLL 1 MILE CARS 75¢" on three lines, with a large numeral "1."

The second example is labeled "B - Exact Change and Attended Toll Lanes." It shows the same vertical highway depicted in the first example. Eight signs are shown along the highway from the bottom to the top of the figure:

  • The first sign is shown as a W9-6 sign to the right of the right lane. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular yellow sign with a black border and legend. It shows the words "PAY TOLL 2 MILES CARS 75¢" on three lines, with a large numeral "2."
  • The second sign is shown as an overhead sign located over the two lanes. It is shown as a horizontal rectangular green guide sign with a white border and legend. It is divided into two vertical sections by a vertical white line. A horizontal rectangular yellow plaque with a black border and legend is shown at the top of the sign, spanning both sections. It shows the words "PAY TOLL 1 MILE" with a large numeral "1." The left section of the sign shows the words "EXACT CHANGE 75¢" on three lines above a short downward-pointing vertical white arrow.
