Figure 2M-3. Arrangement, Height, and Lateral Position of Signs Located Within Recreational and Cultural Interest Areas
This figure illustrates four examples of the arrangement, height, and lateral position of signs located within recreational and cultural interest areas. The illustrations show sign assemblies of square and rectangular brown signs with white borders and legends.
The first sign assembly is labeled "A - Roadside Assembly Business, Commercial, or Residential Area." An amphitheater symbol sign is shown mounted above a right-pointing horizontal arrow sign. The sign assembly is shown placed to the right of a roadway with a curb. The distance from the inside of the curb to the nearest edge of the sign assembly is shown as a dimension of 2 ft MIN. The distance from the bottom edge of the sign assembly to the ground is shown as a dimension of 7 ft MIN.
The second sign assembly is labeled "B - Roadside Assembly Rural Area." Two symbol signs are shown mounted next to each other horizontally with associated directional arrow signs. On the left, a trailer symbol sign is mounted above a left-pointing horizontal arrow sign, and on the right a camping symbol sign is mounted above a vertical upward-pointing arrow sign. The sign assembly is shown placed to the right of a downward-slanting roadway with a paved shoulder but no curb. The distance from the outside edge of the paved shoulder to the nearest edge of the sign assembly is shown as a dimension of 6 ft MIN. The distance from the bottom edge of the sign assembly to the elevation of the roadway at the outside edge of the paved shoulder is shown as a dimension of 5 ft MIN.
The third sign assembly is labeled "C - Roadside Assembly Business, Commercial, or Residential Area (Without Curb)." Three symbol signs are shown mounted together in a triangular pattern, with associated directional arrow signs. At the top of the assembly, a sailboat symbol sign is shown mounted above an upward-pointing vertical arrow sign. Below and to the left, a boat ramp symbol sign is shown mounted above a left-pointing horizontal arrow sign. To the right of that, a rowboating symbol sign is shown mounted above a right-pointing horizontal arrow sign. The sign assembly is shown placed to the right of a roadway with a paved shoulder but no curb. The distance from the outside edge of the paved shoulder to the nearest edge of the sign assembly is shown as a dimension of 6 ft MIN. The distance from the bottom edge of the sign assembly to the ground surface is shown as a dimension of 7 ft MIN.
The fourth sign assembly is labeled "D - Roadside Assembly Rural Area." Seven symbol signs are shown mounted together in a triangular pattern, with associated directional arrow signs. At the top of the assembly, a sledding symbol sign is shown mounted above a snowmobiling symbol sign, which is mounted above an upward-pointing vertical arrow sign. Below and to the left, an ice skating symbol sign is shown mounted above a left-pointing horizontal arrow sign. To the right of that, a ski jumping symbol sign is shown mounted above a right-pointing horizontal arrow sign. The sign assembly is shown placed to the right of the edge of a traveled way, which slants downward. The distance from the outside edge of the traveled way to the nearest edge of the sign assembly is shown as a dimension of 12 ft MIN. The distance from the bottom edge of the sign assembly to the elevation of the roadway at the outside edge of the traveled way is shown as a dimension of 5 ft MIN. Above this sign assembly is the word "OR" and a sign. It is shown as a large vertical rectangular brown sign with a white border and legend mounted on two vertical supports. It is shown divided into three horizontal panels by horizontal white lines. The top panel contains an upward-pointing vertical arrow to the left of a sledding symbol and a snowmobiling symbol, both enclosed within a square white border. The middle panel contains a left-pointing horizontal arrow to the left of an ice skating symbol enclosed within a square white border. The bottom panel contains a ski jumping symbol enclosed within a square white border to the left of a right-pointing horizontal arrow.
A note at the bottom of the figure states "See Section 2A.19 for reduced lateral offset distances that may be used in areas where lateral offsets are limited, and in urban areas where sidewalk width is limited or where existing poles are close to the curb."
